getting a free diagnosis from rac auto on friday and steering is gradually getting worse and worse everyday, getting real tight and stiff now, lets hope its nothing major and power steering fluid is between the low and max mark aswell.

well upate from rac and not looking good at all, they have flushed all power steering fluid out and replaced and no change in steering they have sent off to pedders and they have said it looks like either the sterring rack or shaft is stuffed and or the u Joint is stuffed im not really sure what the u joint is but they mentioned the after market exhaust is quite close and may have something to do with this, which i doubt as asg installed the exhaust. They have advised if it is the rack i will be looking at a couple of grand for genuine parts excluding labour.

has anyone experienced this as i was not expecting to be a bad problem like this and what would be the safest and cheapest way out of this??

A steering rack can be rebuilt for a lot less then that, call APS in Osborne Park, assuming that is the problem

Rooted steering U joint is no more than 30 mins to remove and inspect. Get someone who knows Subarus to do this before you spend any dosh on getting your rack overhauled unnecessarily.

Is there a lot of air coming out of the reservoir when you are turning full left and right? Do this with the front wheels off the ground --- much easier.

Can you here to power steering pump noise when you are steering left to right?

No I cannot. However, I can give your girlfriend's rack a thorough inspection free of charge.

Overhauling steering racks is a specialist procedure*. They are relatively inexpensive for good secondhand racks as they don't regularly fail. We can renew the rack ends, inlet/outlet O rings and coupling easy enough if they are faulty.

* I'm talking about good as new, not new boots and a can of black spraypaint ala wrecker's yard.
