Default MY00 Backfiring

Hi guys,

Recently purchased my first WRX off a previous member of these forums (Chaddy).

The car is a MY00 2000 wrx sedan with a few modifications done to the suspension. The engine has been left stock to the best of my knowledge.

Owned her for a few days now, and am starting to see some areas that need addressing (nothing major).

I just need some understanding from you guys as to why the wrx does a lot of backfiring? This happens when I stop accelerating through a gear, and also when i begin to accelerate. It happens regularly while driving the car in any conditions.

I used the sites search function but everyone with backfiring issues seemed to have a modified engine where I believe mine is kept stock.

I'm not sure if this is relevant but the oil pressure is running at 6? and the boost at 1.0.

Thank you and please be kind to my amateur car knowledge! I'm learning everyday

Mine was doing this mate. Its a bit of preventative maintenance that owners seem to overlook when they are thinking of selling up.

Backfiring is usually caused by the car running too rich (more fuel used than is needed).

The most common cause is the Afm/maf sensor. If that's not it, next point of call is the O2 sensor.

Mao at evo-r plugged in a diagnostic computer to my ECU and we found out instantly. Might be worth checking with them.

Air flow Meter, after market blow-off valve, 02 sensor is less likely but still possible.
Least likely is sparkplugs/ ignition system.

Ah okay. Yeah I don't see it as a major problem at the moment. I reckon your right it is just running a bit rich. The car has a stock bov and had spark plugs replaced early this year. How much did Mao at evo-r charge you for a diagnostic report / fix SyncSubaru?

I'm taking it in for a service later this week to address an oil leak from the right head cam. It's a slow leak but dripping onto the hot exhaust and stinking to high heavens.

Also the radiator appears to have a slow leak as well. Will get this one checked by the mechanics at STechnics before I run any sealants through the radiator.

I will also investigate the possibility of dirty injectors, thanks tuna.

Thanks all. I'll report back after I get the car serviced at STechnics on issues of my oil and coolant leak, and my backfiring.

My old MY99 would backfire exactly like your describing. Stock engine with an
aftermarket partially atmospheric venting BOV. Overfuelled and backfired quite a bit.
If I put the stock BOV back on it stopped.

... LOL... just read your followup that you have a stock BOV

Do not put any 'stop leak' additives in your radiator, all they do is block up all the tubes of the core, bad news.
Get it fixed properly

Why is that funny? I said my engine was stock. The turbo hasn't blown up in 11 years so it must be doing something right.

Thanks johnvk7, looks like I made the right move then

Show Doug or Damien at STechnic the backfiring, can guarantee they will know the reason or you will receive a free hug*!

(*Free hug may not be redeemable)
