Front wheels disengaged?

Hey guys, I searched for an answer for this but didn't really get anywhere. I've got a bugeye wrx, recently had a 6 speed box put in it, just driving home then I could have sworn the front wheels disengaged?! Can this happen? It was for about 30 seconds the ass end would whip out through every round about? I stopped to even check to see if I had a flat tyre or something? After taking off again it felt normal. I've hammered it many times in the rain with very minimal rear wheel spinnage. I'm stumped. Anyone else had this?
Cheers
Dan

No you don't lose the front drive magically.

What year 6 speed went in the car? (DCCD or not?)
Was the rear diff changed to suit the 6 speed and if so, what was put in?

mad_dog153 16-08-2011 02:25 PM

Obviously not magic! I just thought the ratio can change. It's from an 02 Sti, non dccd. Changed the rear diff yes, think it's just the r160 but not 100%

Mister Two 16-08-2011 02:29 PM

Did you put a plated rear diff in at the same time?

Kato 16-08-2011 02:32 PM

I'd guestimate that it is just the difference of the centre/rear diffs compared to the open wrx ones allowing you to power out a more than normal. Check what rear diff was put in (1-way, 1.5-way or 2-way) as that may be the reason, doubtful but never know. Otherwise get the workshop to check and/or have your alignment/tyres checked.

Must say, I haven't had the car's back end whipping out at every round about unless I was trying to do it.

I'd suggest re-visiting driving style until you know what's going on!

Whats with these people complaining about oversteer all of a sudden.

mad_dog153 16-08-2011 02:32 PM

Nope not plated. As far as I know anyway!

mad_dog153 16-08-2011 03:28 PM

Yeah haha would have been good fun if I knew it was coming! Cheers mate, might suss out exactly what diff it is etc. Like I said I'd hammered in the wet heaps and nothing like this has happened!

teejay 16-08-2011 03:57 PM

Oompa loompa's stole your front driveshafts

jEstEr? 16-08-2011 04:07 PM

who installed the rear diff? have you had an alignment recently?

RXqME 16-08-2011 04:58 PM

You havn't answered if it has DCCD or not, if it does then there's your answer! Thats the whole reason i got DCCD :p

Yes he did.

dtrally 16-08-2011 08:36 PM

I installed it, it has the correct shafts. I can't recall exactly the circumstances but I believe the original rear LSD was reassembled with 3.9 ratio gearing.
I'd be looking at the tyres, tyre pressures, whether any sway bar links are broken and whether there's excessive toe out on the rear?

Was going to suggest tyres myself. What brand of tyre? Maxis are like ice skates in the wet, their on the back of mine till I get kumos like I have on the front.
Good luck with it.

Was it a bit of a random route or the sort of route a truck that was spilling diesel or oil might take???

It's unbelievable how slippery things can get with just a little lubrication!!!

+1 on checking for anything loose or broken in everything suspension related.

mad_dog153 17-08-2011 06:16 PM

Cheers guys, tyres are pretty grippy still. Not sure of the brand, suspension seems all good. Swaybars etc. It's usually pretty good in the wet, it was down kelmscott near the bus depot on corfield near Tonkin hway. Could have been oil on the road, next wet day I'm going to head back down there just to see if it's that part of the road maybe!

Got insurance? =P

[MARZS] 18-08-2011 05:25 PM

+1 for tyres.
When i first got my RS, it had toyo's that had gone hard, and even with a virtually stock car, the rear end stepped out big time without any provication. Felt like there was no drive from the front wheels, but it was just that the tyres where so rubbish
