Water Pump?
 

Uh oh, think I am in the shit - broke Shez's car.....

I was driving it on Saturday and after 5 minutes the temp gauge was red hot. I limped it home but it did drop down every now and then. I have read over loads of overheating posts to check the obvious. I have since checked the coolant level, oil level and made sure the thermostat is opening. The fans are working well too. I was about to give up when I heard a clack while it was running and the water pump stopped spinning. The belt was still connected and turning but the pump stopped. After a minute it clacked and started again then stopped etc.

Am I right in thinking this should be spinning all the time?

From what I could tell the shaft on the belt end was turning but the front of the pump was stationery, until it kicked back in again.

Does this mean the end of the pump or can it be repaired/adjusted?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Siezed pump by the sounds.

Replace, not repair. You may as well do timing belt and tensioner while its apart.

How many kms on the car?

It had the motor replaced with the current STI setup only 35,000 kms ago..... then again they may have used the old pump. The car has about 140,000 kms.

Any suggestions where to source a new one? It is an '03 WRX but with the engine change it may need a different pump. I will check for any markings and numbers tonight.

Anywhere - its not a difficult or hard part to find.

Wierd that they would of reused the pump, but it depends if they were sticking to a budget or trying to increase their profit margain.

Tim from West Racing did the conversion so I am sure it was all the good bits used. :)

Not neccessarily - a brand new 207 block (ie an sti block) comes sans oil, water pump etc.

Quite likely yours were reused unless specified that they would be included as new items.

I had the pump in my backup bunky Lib done 2 months ago.

If its leaked onto the timing belt, will need to it as well, as that will promote wear. Wear = snap = oh dear = $$$$.

You sure your not looking at the air con compressor?
Water pump is behind the cam belt covers.
