I believe 4700K is what's allowed but i like 6000K as its white with a tint of blue.
Anything more than that and you're asking for trouble from the rozzas

4300k is closest to 'normal' light temperature. 6k gets you a bit of blue, 8k is too purple and could cause some unwanted attention.
The ADR's also state, that if you want to run HIDs you need auto levelling headlights, and headlight sprayers |

Headlight sprayers - really. I wonder why?

24 volt, I'm guessing your using them on some kinda truck or heavy machinery ?,4300-4700k would be a tiny bit brighter than standard but the best your going to get with out goin blue. Head light sprayers a needed because if the hid light hits dirt it scatters and blinds on coming traffic. Iv heard You May also need thicker wiring because of the increased power. Someone confirm ?

Last time i bought this type of HID kit, it lasted 6 months and the ballast went on it. Spose you pay for what you get.

My understanding of it is 4300k is the brightest and is pure white. Cars factory equipped with HIDs use 4300k bulbs.
Once you start heading into the 6000k territory there's a tinge of blue, brightness is reduced a bit. Anything 8000k and beyond is pointless and purely for wank factor.. If you want maximum brightness, go 4300k. If you want a bit of blue but don't mind a slight loss in brightness go 6000k. If you want to be fully sick uleh, go 8000k+. Also I wouldn't recommend putting HID bulbs is headlights designed for halogen bulbs. The beam pattern is all distorted and all you'll do is blind everyone. What you'll end up with is this: If you really must...just make sure you re-aim the beam lower so that you don't blind everyone. Ideally this is the cut off you want: To achieve this, your headlights either needs to be equipped with projectors or is specially designed for HIDs (e.g. JDM/USDM STI headlights, 34GTR headlights). Also here's a handy chart showing you variations in colour/brightness with each kelvin. Hope that helps. Tin |

Also like redlib said, you pay for what you get.
If you can, try and fork out a bit of extra dosh for quality bulbs. Mao @ EvoR has a comprehensive range of phillip's bulbs (very good quality bulbs) for a decent price. Personally, I've ran a couple of China Ebay spec HID kits and I haven't had any issues yet (I could just be lucky). I'm now running morimoto bulbs which are semi decent (but still no where as good as phillips bulbs). |

HID's draw far less current than Halogen overall, H4 halogens draw 8-9 amps constantly.
Hid's draw 10-15 amps momentarily (3-4 seconds) then settle to 3-3.5 amps during continuous running. Retrofitting isn't illegal afaik, provided the lights are installed correctly, have the proper light pattern (for right hand traffic) & are white in colour (5000k being the limit for OEM). Only projector headlamps require washers as they're the ones that suffer beam scatter if the h/lamp glass is dirty. It's shitty installation & crap light pattern from some chinese kits that will get you pinged - not for the bulb type - but for incorrect light cut off, same as people who install H4 halogens incorrectly, they glare towards on coming traffic. Set them up properly & there is no issue. I've found 4700-5000k is the easiest on my eyes for long distance night drives & will allow you to see the greatest distance. 6000k became fatiguing on my eyes as the road appears dimly lit (so your eyes relax) - but road signs light up BRIGHT making your eyes work hard (or me to squint!). I've been running HID's for the last 5 years or so, I would never go back to Halogen.
