Default Turbo making strange squeal under load.

Had a quick look if this had been posted before but couldn't see anything so here we go.

Basically what happened was driving home from work yesterday and had zero drama until about 10km from home. When I turned a corner off tonkin highway onto Thomas road and as I shifted down to 3rd to take the corner my turbo started making a strange squeal when I gave it a bit coming out of the turn. Happens now only shifting from 2nd through til 4th. I pulled over almost instantly and checked fluids and everything's fine apart from my oil being a little black so going to do a change this weekend.

Anybody else had this issue or know what might be wrong?

Sounds like this video but a fair bit worse than that.

When your take off in first then change into 2nd does the car/turbo sound normal? also does it make any squeal noises when your in 4th and put your foot down then change into 5th?

Where you running your aircon at the time and how many kms since its 100'000km service?

* Just noticed your running a FMIC, might be worth checking all your silicone pipe connectors for a vacuum leak.

This could explain the noise, pressure in fmic pipe work is higher in 2nd/3rd gear so possibly louder?

Nah, no squeal from first to second. Everything sounds fine then and normal spool sound. Only makes a mild mild squeal from fourth to fifth as opposed to the other gears.

Nah, no aircon, that's permanently off. Chassis has done 290xxx and the blocks done 76xxx however it's last service was about 6000 ago.

I'll take it for a quick squirt up my street now and see if it's still doing it.

If you are getting normal boost but a slight squeal then try celaing the air filter as this can cause a sqeal when sucking air through. Other than that look for leaks or small holes.

Worst case if it gets louder is it can be the compressor blade touching the housing - this can be caused by decent boost and the shaft getting forward play - quite common on ball bearing turbo's as the shaft pull forward as the cartidge dies.

What's the best way to clean a pod filter out then mate ?

Hopefully it's not shaft play as that was my first thought but in don't know enough bout turbos to go pulling it apart to find out.

Buy the K & N filter cleaning kit. Consist of 1 x solvent/soap and 1 x red oil spray.

I've always been told that the K&N oil blocks up the AFM? That's why I went with a Apexi dry pod..

Lies.
Over-oiling the filter will contaminate the AFM wire. However, use the product as specified by the manufacturer, and you'll have no problems.

Iv seen countless wrx's and nissans run like crap due to the oil on the filter coating the Afm and sending false signals
