SVX splooged

Yes, "splooged" is the technical term.
After 1 week of owning it, I went down Hepburn Ave and I started hearing spurting noises and a smoke show was on in the interior and engine bay.
I seem to have blown a hose or head or something.
I thought it was the transmission, due to them commonly going in these cars.
Helped me believe so when I heard a bit of a grind when shifting to neutral.
Towed the car home safely.
Wasn't able to pop the hood open, due to release cable snapping the previous day, lol.

Fun, fun, fun.

So, where's the best place to get myself sorted? I may need to rebuild it, seeing how I'm nearing 200000km.
I've heard of WRX swaps, but I was quoted scary prices for that last time :P
I'd also want to keep it a 6cyl to keep the luxury gt thing going.
What kind of bank rape am I looking at for a rebuild?
It's basically a EJ22 + 2cylinders, according to what I heard, so it shouldn't be too drastic, should it?

As for myself, I'm remaining positive. New experience for myself, and prompts me to listen to my car more. I still love the car and wish to keep it. I see broken bits as an open door to what else can be done. Though, if my wallet was human I'm sure I would be receiving multiple stab wounds by now.

Shit hey!
Owned for a week and only paid $4400, gonna cost more than that (probably) to get you going again.
Poor bastard.....

Yeah, unlucky me. I'm hoping it doesn't cost that much. I've heard of rebuilds going for $1000, but that was probably before any damage was done.

I guess I got what I paid for. :P

And thanks, guys for pointing me there.
Appreciate the help.

Strubaru 02-07-2012 02:28 PM

fingers crossed is just a blown radiator hose/radiator/heater hose

did the car overheat at all? if you shut it down before it overheated there's a chance you've saved the motor

as said above get it to a reputable mechanic, maybe someone who knows these inside out as mentioned in your intro thread

Yeah, I turned the engine off immediately after seeing the temp dial swallow viagra. Had to push it to the curb (1600kg isn't exactly easy).
It sounded like a hose got busted as fluids were all over the show (well, just under my car, really), hence the "splooged" term so adequately used.

Something to worry about is that after towing it up some hills (and having the rope snap a few times), my dad got impatient and drove (not to mention go 80 in a 60 zone) in my car to get it the last 2km home. It started to smoke some more and I was worried it would possibly end up in flames. Worst part of the night.

Might let the car sit for a bit until probation bonus comes in mid-July.

out of boredom, I found this. xD

That motor may be ur best bet as I would but money on the fact that u and/or ur Dad have f%$ked ur current motor. I did a similar thing when I was young trying to limp a V6 Pajero home after losing the coolant, seizing it and warping the heads . . .

If it's fucked, then I'd definitely drop the "or" from "and/or". I was hoping he'd pull over after the hill and let us tow it down to our house, but he'd had to put his foot on it for the remainder of the trip home. Da fuq...

I only have 3 and 1/2 days to get that motor. I'm actually keen on it. Looks mint as f***.

Might need to borrow some money. >.<

Seagull has a very low K H6 out of a 06ish GT? Gave STechnic a call.
They don't really know the SVX too well. Can't blame them, but it kinda takes away from their Subaru Specialist slogan :P
Got quoted $110 an hour for inspection.
Then $300 - $6000 depending on the extent of the damage.
Earliest date I can book the car in is on the 10th of July.

You spoke to Dave, he's very good at what he does (answer the phone, paperwork, make coffee....ok, he's shit at making coffee) but he doesn't work on cars. The guys who work on cars generally don't spend any time on the phone. Rest assured we know the EG33, it's a robust unit and would have needed to be well and truly cooked to do damage. It's not a 6 cylinder EJ22, it has double overhead cam heads and is more like a non turbo 6 cylinder version of the EJ20B. The later EZ30 is not related at all and would be a mammoth task to convert, rule that option right out. I'd like to help you get back on the road if it's a simple matter of repairing a radiator tank and bleeding the cooling system however we are not able to squeeze your car in until the 10th unfortunately.

teejay 03-07-2012 11:46 PM

Snatch strap + mates 4wd.

Otherwise ask David at STechnic for his towing contact. Cost me sub $100 from Kwinana to STechnic last time.

REXXXED 05-07-2012 03:03 PM

If you paid for ultimate roadside assistance with RAC each year (as i do), it would have been a free tow from when your car broke down to your place (perhaps saving your engine from your old man). And then a free tow to the mechanic too.

Have had 3 tows for free from the RAC in the past 2 years (not the Subaru). 2 of them weren't even my car, I'm just covered by my Roadside assistance because I was driving them.... One was my mates brother 4x4 from the middle of the bush near Nannup to Dunsborough after we popped a tyre and had no spare.....

Look into it for sure it will save you money and peace of mind seeing as you are cruising around in a 20+ y/old car

I've had a string of bad luck. My debit/bank card was lost just prior to me applying for roadside assistance. I was able to get insured, but no rsa. :(
Next day my hood release cable snapped.
The following day, the splooging happened.

Sucked to be me last weekend.

Never trust a tow truck operator who's not a pure-bred pedigree bogan.;)

Update; The bonnet cable wasn't broken as it appeared at first. We finally managed to undo the bonnet catch through the grille and found that the cable had been cut and joined to a remote boot release solenoid that was defunct. So one can only assume the bonnet has not been opened for quite some time!

Pressure tested the cooling system and found the system to be sound other than a leak from the heater core inside the cabin. Step one is to by-pass the core to determine if any other damage has been done to the engine when it overheated. At this stage it appears to be ok, so finger's crossed. Later on the owner can elect to repair the heater core but be warned it is a massive undertaking on a SVX. It would probably make more sense on an old car like this to rug up with more clothes in winter!!

WOO!
You the man! I'll be sure to bring you some decent coffee when I rock up to pick it up xD
As for the heater core, if it needs the attention then give it. I want to maintain most of the luxury aspect of this car. So getting the AC and heater to full operating spec would be ideal.
I'd appreciate any updates to costs as it will give me an idea of how to organise my funds for other things.
While it's there, I might as well ask if a transmission cooler could be fitted.
I also have a list of other things I'd like to replace on the car, if you don't mind me asking. I might as well throw in what I can while it's there.

Apart from the fact that the part is probably obsolete you really have no idea what a dash out job on an obscure car like this is going to cost you, put up with the stink of cooling fluid in the winter which until now you hadn't noticed and keep an eye on the coolant then re-route/bypass for the warmer months.
