Hi mate, same thing happened to a mate of mine, though this was a hyundai, it turned out to be a button/switch under the brake pedal, you had to climb onto the floor and look up behing the brake pedal to see it, this was adjustable so we just had to screw it out a bit so the pedal was actually pushing on this button when the brake pedal was pushed and that fixed the problem

EDIT: just had a look at my subi and the buttons actually on the inside of the brake pedal so obviously the brake lights are activated when this button is released not pushed, my bad, but anyway i bet this is your problem, see if you can adjust it

Cheers for the idea, will check now and edit post to tell the results.

EDIT:
I've found the switch however I'm not sure which way to adjust it and it's quite hard to manouvre my not so slender frame into the footwell to even see the switch.

From memory it has a locking ring/nut you would first have to back off then rotate the whole assembly, i know it s a bit of a prick to get to! You would need to screw it in away from the pedal so when the brake pedal is pushed the button is completely released

Thanks mate, that got the wing light working again so I'm guessing the main pod lights are shorting out somewhere or they have loose wiring.
