More torque required...yes im a torque whore.
Lads,
As you know I've had the TD05-18G on my car for a while now. Initially it had a cold air intake but I switched back to the air box about 2 months ago and lost 10Nm of torque (initally was 226kw/375Nm). Car currently makes 228kw/365Nm. Doesn't exactly pull hard (at least from the drivers seat), it's just very smooth once past 3000rpm (makes ~330Nm @ 6300rpm) and goes okay, just feels sluggish. The TD04 + Butler TBE made 153kw/400Nm (but it made bugger all torque after 4000rpm...under 200Nm @ redline) but it felt awesome when it did hit. I'm after more torque and the only things I can think of are reinstalling the CAI and doing a set of UEL headers (ultrex headers) + retune in search of that magic 400Nm mark again. Reason I ask is plenty of cars on here recently are hitting that on stock VF52's, Dave's Foz is hitting 420Nm with an 18G as well. Any suggestions, thoughts? Cheers, Shane. |
You already know the answer.
|
Yeah those two things are the only thing I could think of as far as bolt-ons go.
|
...422 Nm to be exact :D
I am also running the stock box still and do have Tomei UEL headers wrapped. |
^^ See
422! Thats massive haha. I want that lol. |
tell your tuner more torque less hp
|
VF36 or 37
|
I've got a 37 you can have for cheep cheep :)
|
probably stupid question coming up here... i'm after quick 0-100 speeds. just a random example here, what would be better. 400hp + 300nm (just as an example) or 300hp + 400nm?
|
400hp = bigger e-peen
I'll take all the help I can get in that department, so 400hp everyday of the week. Shane, EL headers will get you more torque and quicker spool if you can handle sounding like a Honda with a fart cannon. |
Power sells cars, torque wins races - Carroll Shelby.
|
how about just run it up on the dyno on a coolish day, dry ice on the tmic and 40 psi in your tyres ? problem solved
|
Shane, I gained 32nm by adding my UEL headers to the equation. Now sits at 389nm. If you do the same you should get closer to the figure you're chasing.

Carroll Shelby - Famous for low HP/ high torque cars. Right? |

so you're saying you added aftermarket unequal length headers and gained 32nm?
...422 Nm to be exact :D I am also running the stock box still and do have Tomei UEL headers wrapped.
just curious, and considering you two both opted to keep the UEL burble but still go aftermarket, how does the exhaust note sound compared to the OEM UEL headers? and what brand respectively |

Right?
He sold quite alot of cars didnt he ;) |
Meth Injection :D
|
Meth Injection :D
agreed, water/meth injection. or more boost. |
Here's some data for you to consider:
Figures are for (the same) MY06 STI....all on the MMS roller dyno and all using ECUTek III (Readings are all ATW): MY06 STI + Stainless (Tomei) UEL headers: 197 KW + 409 NM Above with UEL headers + CAI + silicon intake: 214 KW + 425 NM Above with UEL headers, CAI, silicon + PW fuel surge setup: 217 KW + 430 NM Above but minus headers and surge: 205 KW + 420 NM |
If my car sounds like a Honda then fark I love Hondas! :D
I have a sr20 ;) Im on 400Nm with VF37 keen for more, still stock 207 which has done 110k km :( |
Cheers for the feedback lads. Will ring Race Torque and ask Lane about headers + re-installing my CAI along with a retune.
Don't know if should run anymore boost on a stock 255 (17/18psi atm). On a side note meth injection has always intrigued me....maybe another time. |
Tune dependent Shane - I've been running 19psi with no known issues since the tune.
My torque figure is reasonably substantial considering the OEM cat back exhaust. |

Unopened EJ205.. lots of boost and standard headers. Still going strong.. |
What turbo Intra?
|
Also remember you are trying to compare hub dyno to roller dyno. There is a difference!
Tbh, 360ish newts on a 2.5L is piss weak. A dyno reads the torque and calculates your power from there. Torque is everything. Post up your graph again (I cbf searching :p) as it seems laggy. FYI: Power (kW) = (Torque x RPM x 2 x Pi) / 60,000 is what the dyno calculates. Given your low torque max value you can see why its not giving you the 'kick' you want. |
so you're saying you added aftermarket unequal length headers and gained 32nm?
Yes, it's in my driveway thread/dyno chart. Had 354nm, added UELs, EBC and TMIC, gained a bit over 10hp & 32nm |
No replacement for displacement i think. Mine and daves rides are 2.5's and seem to develop larger torque easier but seem to fades as the rpm gets too high, downside is lower peak hp, but upside it the cars dont have to be whipped like a stray cat to access the power band, where the 2.0L's make higher peak HP but need to be spinning like a demon.. that is the key to small displacement engines anyways, high rpm. I think looking at the latest tech twinscroll stetup from a reputable source would be a good place to start! 257, zorst, flash 441nm at 4000rpm :P
|
That's my dyno sheet.
TD05: Butler TBE, STI panel filter, AVO silicone inlet, Grimspeed BCS, Walbro, Blouch TD05-18G, Process West TMIC, ID 725cc injectors Run done in 4th gear TD04 for reference: Butler TBE, Walbro pump, nothing else. Run done in 3rd gear |
E85 an option or is it a daily?
That will give you a real fat band of torque..... |
Yeah it is a daily so E85 is a no go huggy :(
Just got off the phone with Race Torque. Can't go in today to speak to Lane as they are bit busy and Lane is off to Japan until the 20th, so I'll just sit tight until then. I chucked the TD04 graph up as well (TBE + Walbro + everything else stock) Edit: Just noticed the runs were done in different gears too. |
Edit: Just noticed the runs were done in different gears too.
oh really |
What turbo Intra?
Stock as a rock VF34. |
There is a change of correction and a massive change in humidity on the two runs too.
For the sake of the cost of a power run, might be worthwhile doing an independent run at MMS or ASG if possible. |

My 2.0l makes 414 at 3750rpm. Stops making any power after 6500 so it doesnt really need to be whipped like a stray cat. |
Boost = torque.
Also as alluded to by Kato: You are trying to compare different dynos, a month apart in different conditions, different gears. Those bits of paper are essentially useless. |
I don't know why you'd be so hung up on the dyno numbers when you haven't got any figures that actually tell you how fast that car is. Eg Barbs, Plex or even RAC.
Once you cant get a faster time, then look at the car. You can't judge your cars performance through roundabouts and take offs from sets of lights. |
You can't judge your cars performance through roundabouts and take offs from sets of lights.
I don't know.....:D But yeah, diff dynos, days, weather etc etc never going to get a good comparison. For all you know your car is a ~400Nm car on ASGs dyno..... |
im not into running cars hard if its not neccesary. I'd go down a strip once, maybe ever, as a reference. Great way to thrash a perfectly good car, for what? skidpans look fun, but i wouldnt make a habit of throwing around an expensive car. sure my cars really slow anyways..
|
I don't know.....:D
no ones seen my front end.. id rather egg v8s on with a little stab of first then back off and watch the show as they angry fist pump and blast off making all sorts of noise. lol |
