I'm very confused by this thread...

Do you have a MY04 STi or WRX?

STi = VF series turbo
WRX = TD04

If you have an STi, changing from one VF to another is a waste of time.

If you have a WRX, yes upgrade to a VF series turbo. It is a good idea to upgrade the fuel pump (insurance for a 8 year old car) and upgrade the TMIC to a STi unit to maximise the turbo. You can also decap your stock injectors making them 816cc, which is more than enough for a VF series.

You don't need an aftermarket ecu.

Search the threads for the 1001 other threads on installing a VF series turbo on a GD WRX.

VF39 is twin scroll.
You need headers, exhaust down pipe, oil lines, brackets. The air/fuel ratio sensor is in a different spot.
You will definitely need a tune as well.
Upgrade injectors and fuel pump to be safe

VF36, VF37 & VF38 are the TS.

Judging by previous threads started, he has an MY01 WRX.

Any of the single scroll VF turbos will be a good upgrade for an MY01, some obviously better than others. My suggestion is get the newest one you can afford. While its getting done, I'd suggest deleting the cat converter in the up-pipe. As the car is 10+ years old, a drop in Walbro replacement fuel pump is definitely a good idea.

These will be fine with any of the various ecu flashes (Verso, EcuTek, OpenEcu, evoRso etc)

Correct.

VF39
Single scroll turbo used on USDM STI and latest 2.5L STIs released internationally. Smaller than VF30/VF34.

Not sure why you want to upgrade to one.

In saying that I upgraded my VF35 to a VF34 and made 20hp more - 281hp lol

and now with VF37 twinscroll still same hp but slightly quicker spool and sounds like a civic/truck :P
(not worth the conversion imo)

Yes mine is a 06 wrx which is 2.5 so thats why I'm getting more torque but my tuner said my numbers were low because I run 95 but he mentioned on 98 I could see 400+nm and more hp

Why don't you run a vf48 that's the latest bolt on for the earlier models
