Default Water pump replacement - EJ22

Hi folks... been told by the local Subi mechanics that my 91 Libby water pump housing has sprung a leak & needs replacement. (Well, why not.. I've only done heads, hoses, radiator & thermo so far )

OK, so I ordered a new one & was just browsing the Gregorys manual to see what I'm up for.

YIKES!! Talk about involved!

Remove:

coolant,
radiator & fan assembly,
drive belts,
starter motor,
crankshaft pulley,
timing belt front covers & left rear cover,
left camshaft sprocket,
idler pulley retaining bolts,
timing belt & tensioner mounting bracket,
tensioners,
lower heater hose.

Plus: actions to prevent flywheel turn, rotating crankshaft with attention to timing marks, prevent camshaft rotation etc etc. along the way.

Now, I'm fairly game & up to the challenge; but is this reasonably achievable in say, 4 hours, with only car ramps? Any opinions on whether I should be attempting this myself or give it back to the experts?

Any words of wisdom?

I've never done it on a Subaru before, but I have on a Ford Fairlane V8 and a Mazda RX7.

Water pumps are fairly straight forward, if your mechanically minded. It can also be a VERY messy job.

The bits I'd be concerned about are the pulley removal (you might need a puller for that), and obviously stuffing up the cam timing..

I cant really see it happening in 4 hours if you've never done it before, but you never know

Do consult someone who has done it in the past, thats my advice.

dont see why you need to take the starter motor off...thats just pointless busy work.

Yeah seems like extra work for no reason.
