On my Liberty I used to run 36 fron 38 rear. The recomended tyre pressures induce understeer, for that safe predictable straight line when you fuckup. a few PSI higher in the rear helps bring the back around.

yes, as you said, it depends on the brand.

conti-sport contact 2's handle it.

to be honest, i'd be more worried about a dodgey tire shop not torque wrenching my wheels to the car, rather then tire pressure

Cars dont leave my workshop without me checking that the nuts have been torqued using a torque wrench. We have to tick off and signature on each car's work authority.

Some places just rattle them up and send people out, which is dangerous! try that on a commodore rear end and see how many wheel nuts come loose when its put on the ground!

When your tyres are warm you know you'll be running about 47psi actually, thats light truck territory!

OT: What's the correct torquing for wheel nuts? I don't put mine on as tight as possible, but pretty damn tight..

We torque most cars to 75ft/lbs.

If the breaker bar snaps, you have applied too much torque

check the sidewall, it'll give you a bead seating value and a max value, run it to what they say the max operating pressure is, and drop the fronts by maybe 1 or 2 psi.
18's tend to like big pressure to hold them firm.

considering you rarely motorsport it, your unlikley to induce huge tempurature's into them.
