Default 05 wrx turbo install. WTF

posting on behalf of a mate with an 05 wrx. Today we installed a vf39( 2nd hand), turbo back exhaust and bigger top mount intercooler, ready for a verso tune next week. Started it up and noticed white smoke coming intermittently from the exhaust ( and cel but assume thats normal) , let it idle for 15 min, took it for a slow lap around the block ( did not hit boost), hoping it would go away, every time he accelerated it would puff out more smoke. Then took it to all star garage, who said to keep driving it slowly and if it goes away its fine, and if it doesn't the turbo is broken. Driving it home, the smoke had completely stopped, got the revs to about 4000 and then the power cut, seemed like fuel cut white smoke came out from the exhaust and turbo area and then the engine died. And wouldn't start again, then got it towed back home.

Thoughts? Did he get sold a dodgy turbo? or something to do with cel / ecu / not being tuned causing it to cut out?
