New clutch in the Gc8
Hey guys - looking for some advice. The GC8 needs a new clutch pretty soon. I can change oil, spark plugs, brakes, and changed the drums to discs but havent had a look at something like this. I was going to give it a crack but have also read I can create a bit of havoc like breaking pins etc by doing myself. Is this an experts only thing or give it a crack and see what happens.

Clutch isn't that hard of a job, but it can be a bitch to separate the box from the engine. You will also need a pulling tool of some sort for the bearing.
If you are not confident, get a mate who's done it before to help ... Or just take it to a workshop lol. Workshops will charge somewhere between 1200-1500 supply & install depending on the car. |

Quick question is your car NA or Turbo , i am having a punt it is NA by your avatar.
A workshop will be your best bet due to the fact you will get some sort of backup should a fault arise due to installation. Doing it on the ground is just a major pain in the arse due to the dowel pins freezing in place and require soaking with a good penetrating fluid to assist in removal. being NA it will be a push type clutch which will make the job a little easier. with a hoist and someone with a sound mechanical background it will only take approx 3 hours to do drive in drive out. Make sure you use a machined flywheel whether its yours or an exchange unit or you will be wasting your time and money and will end up with a horrible shuddering clutch that will have a short life span. Be prepared when the transmission is removed to also find other problems such as an oil leak or such that can be addressed whilst the transmission is out.

Flywheel-
One opinion I have seen on here is that even a machined flywheel can cause clutch shudder. I suggest you price up a new one rather than risk an exchanged unit. This applies to both NA and turbo subbies. |

Its not the machining that will cause the clutch shudder unless done by a knob.
I work on subarus for a living at a renowned subaru specialist and have seen most of the vehicles that have complained of this and our findings have been related to poor manufacture of the clutch pressure plate, namly the pivot ring is poorly made or has been tfitted offset in the pressure plate.
