clutch problem

hey guys

recently been noticing something strange. after i change gears and take my foot off the clutch and accelerate im noticing the revs go higher but the speed isn't proportionately going with it... and i can smell that clutch burning smell as if i've still got my foot on the clutch when it's not. even when i'm just cruising on 4th and give it more acceleration the revs will jump high but the speed isn't going as high, and then that clutch burning smell will appear. car is 06 wrx...

haven't noticed anything physically stopping the clutch from coming up, looks fine...

any ideas?

Sounds like clutch is slipping, same thing happened in my old WRX. Time for a new one.

abs 16-05-2014 03:37 PM

so that's what the term "clutch slipping" means... always hear about it not sure what it meant.

Straner 16-05-2014 03:53 PM

yep. Happened to mine right after i bought it (learnt my lesson from buying an exec demo car). Time for a new clutch!

teejay 16-05-2014 04:37 PM

Clutch slipping means it doesn't have enough friction with the flywheel to transfer all the load through it anymore - usually due to worn pressure plate.

Ask me how I know!

strayakent 16-05-2014 04:58 PM

wow! seems to be a common trend? new clutch pretty soon after purchase... because we all know were all really responsible when we fisrt drive these eyy guys.. ;) ;) eyyyyy? ;) ill ask tj.. how do you know?

abs 16-05-2014 05:28 PM

well i bought the car from prev owner in 2012 and it hasn't been changed since brand new so 123,000kms in 8years seems likes a decent lifespan. needs new brakes too... i cri evrytim T.T $$

Depend on the driver. Sum ppl cant even last the clutch upto 50,000 km.. lol

abs 17-05-2014 11:38 AM

so how urgent would a thing like this be to fix? would it be able to hold out a couple months or should i get it changed asap?

teejay 17-05-2014 11:57 AM

Drive it off boost will last some time.

Im no mechanic, but I would suggest the sooner the better. It's only going to get worse as it wears, and you'll get to the point where you'll give the engine gas and the revs are going to climb, and you'll be going nowhere.

I did have a clutch go on my MY00 WRX and it slipped and shuddered something cronic under accelleration. The whole front end of the car felt like it was bouncing or driving over ripple strips. It had to be fixed!

Allow for $1200 to $1600 depending on where you take it (cheapest isnt always best with a job like this).

Avoid heavy duty, ultra cool, shit hot clutches. They shudder like shit in stop/start traffic, are a pain in the arse to drive with, and place extra strain on the gearbox. I would hope most people would recommend the Subaru OEM clutch, which Im lead to believe is good for a 270hp or more at the wheels?

teejay 17-05-2014 08:26 PM

I just had a brand new exedy heavy duty organic fitted - it should be less than 1200 dollars.

It also drives like an oem clutch - no shudder, not heavier than stock...

It's definitely something you want sorted sooner than later. The clutch went on my Impreza about a month before I got it turboed, pulled onto Abernethy rd and all of a sudden it was revs spiking but no speed. Had to limp home from the airport up the hill with only a touch of usable accelerator before it started slipping - not a fun experience!

Had my clutch cable adjusted and it allowed the clutch to engage properly again, was only a temporary fix as it was all getting ripped out in a months time anyway - survived with no slip until the night before it was due to go in with a few accidental clutch burning moments in between so it worked at least!

I've been quoted recently around the $1200 supplied and fitted mark for an uprated clutch + install

dnbosiris 17-05-2014 11:58 PM

Yeah half this price is labour. Clutch itself I paid 500 for a competion clutch.

abs 18-05-2014 09:00 AM

Yeh I probably will just get the OEM one as I don't do any track days or anything. It's just my street daily pretty much stock hp anyway. But still... over 1k? Balls
