just got an engine rebuild - what are the Do's and Don'ts for "breaking it in"?
Hi Guys,
my02 sti (2.0L turbo, EJ207) just had an engine rebuild. What are some tips for breaking it in. General rules and what to do and try to do while in the breaking in process. Also had a new clutch install. Any tips is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys in advanced, Merc |
Drive it like you stole it

seriously?
I thought you shouldnt rev it too high? |
surely the people who rebuilt it would give you the run in process?
surely the people who rebuilt it would give you the run in process?
yeah they did, just wondering what the collective opinion is of the forum to be certain. Thanks, Merc |
I haven't had to break in a motor, but I've heard thrash it and granny it.
My advice - follow the instructions of the person who built it. |
I would trust the person that built your engine and that you paid your hard earned money to, more than I would trust a bunch of retards on an Internet forum.
You have your answer from him. I say, listen to it. Ps: Thrash the fuck out of it/drive it like you stole it - will be mentioned a few times. As I said, retards on an Internet forum..... Do you really trust them? |
Do's - whatever the guy who built it said.
Dont's - follow the advice of ever Tom, Dick and Harry on the internet. |
I've heard a few as below:
Don't keep it at constant revs - eg, cruising down the freeway on cruise control Do vary loads on the engine - eg go up Greenmount hill in a few different gears to help bed in the rings Don't rev out to red line nor keep it below say 2500rpm. Work the engine in gradually over 1000kms then drop the oil and give it a good flush, full back up with recommended oil. All, some or none of these may be correct. Just different things I've heard along the way. |
Yep what phizzle said had a few engine rebuilds over the years and was given this advice do not let the car labour in gear vary revs but not thrash it or drive down freeway on the same revs for hours on end. Basically general driving round town is pretty much suited to it. In saying that whatever your engine rebuilder has recommended as he is the one giving you a warranty.
