operating oil temperature and overall temp for my02 sti?

Hi Guys,

just wondering what the normal oil temp and overall temp for the EJ207 is?

The oil temp gauge shows around 27-30degrees celcius while driving normally (below 5000rpm). And i dont push it.

But the temp gauge on the dash is around halfway.

And after i drive the car, the engine bay seems very hot. So hot i cant even touch the metal stick that props up the hood.

Is this normal?

The coolant level does seem a bit low.

Thanks guys,
Merc

Never monitored how hot my oil gets as I do not have sensors, my engine coolant how ever sits at a toasty 87' on the freeway.

Normal oil temp is 60-70 degrees driving on the street.

Normal coolant temp is 86-92 (fans cut in at 94)

Engine oil should be around 80 to 90 degC depending how hard your driving. Sounds like your gauge or sensor is faulty

Really?

Here's my DEFI gauge cluster - oil temp is taken from an oil gallery in the top of the block = 65C. this is after a 24 psi 1-4th gear pull...... and cruising at 100kph (photo shot by passenger :) )

(Ignore the labels 'Water temp' is oil temp, 'Air temp' is Water temp at the crossover pipe.)

Well every car I've seen the oil temp is quite close to the water temp. In all Subaru's I've seen the temp hovers round the 85 degC. After hard acceleration, it goes up to over 90degC
Same in my Mrs XR5, that hovers above 80degC even when cruising
That is with the engine at OT.
The oil is cooled by the coolant, so I don't see how it can be 30-40 degC cooler then the coolant that is cooling it.
That is just what I've seen

Rossco 14-02-2015 01:45 AM

Mine will creep up to 80 if I'm stopped in traffic for 5 mins or if I'm stopped at the lights at a freeway exit. so my guess is airflow over the sump pulls heat from the oil.

The oil 'cooler' on an EJ also functions to bring the oil up to operating temp quicker after a cold start.

If it takes coolant to reach operating temp in 10 mins, how long would it take oil temp to reach operating temperature? Or does it depend it on to many variables

Rossco 14-02-2015 02:47 AM

My car takes about 7mins gentle driving to reach 86c for coolant & another 5mins for the oil temp to start to come off the peg at 40c (or about 4km from my driveway).

I do have a thick ally radiator in mine, so a stock cooling systems might come up a bit quicker coolant temp-wise - oil would still be the same as above.

There must be a reason for the difference in what I've seen for oil temps versus what you see Rossco.
The new WRX, STI and XT Forester all have an oil temp reading and they all are above 80degC when at OT.
Plus what I saw on the XR5.
Where is your sensor? Between the oil cooler and the block?
