Freshen up
Hey guys,
I'm pulling the engine out of my 99 GC8 next week to fix the right hand cylinder head. While it's out i'll also do timing belt and rear crank seal and more than likely freshen up the left hand head and find a good 2nd hand head for the right and freshen that up with some new parts too. See how the valves etc are when I open mine up before deciding which path to take. While it's out should I do some other basic things? Bolt ons like power steering, aircon, alternator I was going to leave as they can be changed easily with the engine in. Looking for for things that are 10X easier to do while engine is out. Engine has 200K on the clock. This is my daily runabout so cams, worked heads are not on the radar ;) any thoughts or ideas? |
Update :)
Took the engine out last weekend. Today I took the intake off, marked all the leads, turbo off, alternator, plugged all the holes ready for a degrease tomorrow night. Also ordered engine seal and gasket kit, thermostat, timing belt kit and a water pump. Tomorrow I will see if they do a hose kit as pretty much all the hoses need replacing. I'll take the heads off and work out if I need some replacements or whether mine can be fixed up. I have to say I'm glad I'm doing this myself. Had help from a couple guys from here who I will thank personally and dean from maximum Motorsport. Those guys have been good to me since I got this car and their service and customer skills and second to none!! If any of those boys are on here you're awesome! Looking forward to getting it back together and looking sweet in the next week or so. |

Keep the posts coming. |
You're probably doing this already but consider replacing as many of the oem spring clamps with tridant worm drive ones. This is one thing I didn't do and a few started leaking. In particular the coolant lines to and from the turbo.
|
yeah doing all of the hoses and clamps now.
|
A brand new EJ207 block, pre-assembled by Subaru, with forged pistons, is only about $2500. Just sayin'...
|
yeah did toss up on that option as well
|
Well I have caught a break. $100 to repair my cylinder head proper and remove the araldite holding it together.
Checked the liners and they look awesome, heads are in great shape so looks like the engine is in good condition which is a bonus. Timing belt was near new but hadn't changed the pulley bearings so I'll change those and see if I can't offload the brand new belt I just purchased. Now the fun begins. Wait for heads, change out all gaskets and seals and start to put it back together :) |
That is good news on the head repair!
If you have a fresh timing belt may as well install it. Perhaps the head gaskets also since they are off anyway? Diy all done in one hit you'll save a fortune in future costs using the Perth-WRX mobile app |
I've ordered a complete engine seal and gasket kit to do every item I can, timing belt and bearings while its out and water pump. Next time it comes out is if the bottom end goes and an EJ207 is getting strapped in :D

Pics, pics!
|
Lol I'll post some shortly :)
|
Few photos before I start putting it all back together. Old and new clutch, front timing gear and some fresh parts to put back on :)

If the bottom end was stuffed. I have a forged 2ltr here with a MSR crank & JE pistions, race bearings

Wish mine was lol

These are pure car porn!!!
Stoked with the job the engine exchange did on these heads. The 2nd pic is the previously damaged one that was araldited. New water pump, thermostat and idler bearings done too. Front and rear crank seals with new tensioner. Cool you must be stoked mate. When are you putting her back in?
|
Hopefully have it all back together by tomorrow night and going in Sunday.
You'll probably tell me I'll be dropping it in saturday ;) |
All that work, why use the same shitty tired block?
|
Because I don't have a spare 2.5k at the moment.
Don't have the money to do this either. |
All back together so was time to drop it on
Just a couple hours to go now :) |
Overkill on the Rocker cover sealant bud! Haha
Keep up the good work either way! |
Overkill on the Rocker cover sealant bud! Haha
Keep up the good work either way!
Im told sealant is only needed on the any sort of edge of a rocker cover gasket. Is that right? using the Perth-WRX mobile app |
Yeah when it squished it showed we had too much although we tried to be light lol won't hurt ;)
No I'd have to say that isn't true. We used it for holding gaskets in place, facing sealant etc on intake. Doesn't hurt anything and helps seal every small piece. |
Engine is in, turning and won't start. Have fuel in the rails but obviously a spark issue somewhere.
Knew it couldn't go smooth hahaha |
Plenty of support here if you need it,
Some experts in this field.... Seagull, Rossco, to name a couple.... |

Love some! Happy to pay if they can come look at it. Car is in forrestfield or anything o look for.
Camshaft timing is probably first question. We lined up the single lines on the cam cogs to the single lines on the covers. This meant the double lines basically met each other. Hope that is right as that's what I read on naisoc. |
On sent

So update
Still no spark. Rechecked the timing as I thought it was out. Was spot on, cam and crank sensors changed, put a pulse on the injector and that lit up so sensors are definitely working. Still have not one ounce of spark to fire this puppy up. All plugs to ecu checked again, pulled apart and then pushed til the click. Apart from the 2 sensors, what else makes these cars spark? I'm thinking maybe my coil has died but I'm led to believe that is near on impossible. I'll take any suggestions :) Oh and if someone lives around Guildford or Ellenbrook can I borrow a coil to test for 1/2 hour. Cheers Viper |

Well all sorted and now running!
Lesson for beginners. Mark injectors 2/4 and cam sensor as all plugs are the same. Had cam sensor plug on injector. |
And how does it run?
|
ha it's always the simple stuff. lesson learnt, good on ya for sorting it ;)
|
Tonight I'll run it properly. Only gave it a kick to see I had spark.
|
Been home for an hour. Topped up oil and put some water in. Going to run a flush through just to clean a few lines before putting coolant in.
Idling beautifully and turbo winding on nicely. So impressed I've managed to build up an engine and have it run. |

So a couple days on and really happy with the engine. Definitely a lot smoother, doesn't even move at idle whereas before would shake a little in the bay. Hasn't missed a beat and I'm just starting to wind the gears out now and stretch her legs.
Before though it use to bounce up to nearly 20psi when WOT in 5th. Now it's holding a constant 16-17psi 1-4th gear use to sit close to 17 and is around 15.5-16psi I know gauges aren't completely accurate and I also know I have a split on the intake side of the turbo hose that goes under the intake. $350 ex Japan so I need to find a 2nd hand one locally but wondering if the split could be allowing air to escape so turbo isn't hitting full boost or now my gauge is just more accurate as everything is newish. Thoughts anyone? |
