Manual Gearbox and Diff oils 1998 WRX
Hey
Want to change my gearbox and rear diff oils,no idea when they have been last done, so want to keep everything good. car has covered nearly 190kms, Gearbox can be a little Notchy when cold, can feel some 3rd gear synchro wear. Read on a few forums about redline oil being used with good results? Just wondered what people here use? Cheers |

It's a really good diy job. I did mine about a year and half ago and used Motul gear 300 75W90.

I've always used Redline blue in the box and red in the diff, box was changed after 8yrs (because I picked up some cheap) with a few Motorplex days and a bit of cone racing, and the diff oil is well over 11yrs old and going strong - but I have only done about 70,000k's in that time, guess I should change the brake fluid and PS fluid too as it's the same age lol.
I'd recommend Redline any day, just make sure your box is drained for at least a day as it does not mix well with other oil.

I used redline for years in my old GC8 and it was great. No issues at all.

NOT REDLINE OILS FOR SUBARU BOXES OR DIFFS!
Use the castrol syntrax for both Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

From what I know the redline oil puts a wax coating on everything, causing problems like blockages and leading to failure, afaik it's more of a Subaru thing, Also you've got a viscous diff centre(depending on what model you have) and this works best with the syntrax oil from castrol, basically what it is from factory

Yep pretty sure but double check with them on this one but that is what stechnic told me as well when it also comes time for a rebuild they hated because it sticks to everything. I had mine changed to syntrax and had no change on shift quality.
