Wastegate Flutter

I like the sound of the wastegate flutter. Can anyone tell me if its possible to create that sound on a MY00 runnin stock turbo, BOV and wastegate?

Sorry for noob questions

werticusness 31-08-2006 12:22 AM

isnt that the air going backwards through the turbo and is a bad thing?

but probably not having a bov will do it!

cH4nZ 31-08-2006 12:33 AM

my car... no BOV = flutter? damn. I just like that sound i hear from other ppls bov with an fluttering echo
Just wondering if i can have that with stock gear. Though i still want my BOV to still have its use

olite 31-08-2006 04:03 AM

with stock? errr.... no don't think so.

Think you wind the pre-tension of the piston to the BOV tight if you want that "cha cha cha" sound. However.. thats bad.

Mister Two 31-08-2006 07:40 AM

Get a Pod Filter, and then take off the bov and block off all associated pipes. DONE!

Beware though... Doing this causes your turbine blades to rapidly deccelerate when you close the throttle. This rapid decceleration puts a fair bit of pressure on the bearings on the turbo. Running no BOV will significantly decrease the lifespan of your turbo. But dont worry, TD04 WRX turbos are cheap. Of you can afford to replace it when it dies, go for it! :D

Don't know if non users can access this, but plenty of info about turbo flutter:

Get a Pod, FMIC and run no bov and it will flutter off its nuts!

As mister two said beware it will shorten the life span of your turbo and could chip the blades.

EXPLICIT 31-08-2006 10:52 AM

In seriousness, you wont 'replicate' the sound. Your best option would be a pod filter (be sure to isolate it from engine bay heat or its a step backwards). Furthering that a change of bov will give you all the noise you want, bearing in mind an external venting bov on a factory tune will reduce fuel consumption due to overfueling off throttle.

How will it chip the blades?

my 32 had ppl thinking I was a Melbourne Leb ... it fluttered hard. 100mm fmic, long pipes, no bov , k and n filter.

Liberty is similar, pod, hks bov, long pipes 75mm fmic, and it flutters pretty hard too... cant really stop it.

Adr3naL1N 31-08-2006 11:06 AM

even a simple pod filter can get u the noise you want, thats if you wanna keep the stock bov my bov is pretty quiet but when i take my foot off the throttle my pod flutters like crazy, its a blitz sus filter in a custom air box.

cH4nZ 31-08-2006 11:34 AM

Okay, looks like i need a pod filter. Thanks everyone for replies.

Most people wont end up chipping blades, but quickly worn out bearings is bound to happen. Chipped blades only happens on some older design turbos such as the VF22.

As big as a VF22 is, it was never designed to run big boost. Initially, I beleive it was designed to run with a 34mm restrictor in place before the turbo inlet.

EXPLICIT 31-08-2006 12:27 PM

Yes 22 was designed purely for a restrictor. As such max required boost from it was 'upto' 1.4bar.

I said it could cip the blades as i have seen/heard of it happening before on a TD04 and VF series turbo.

LegacyGT 31-08-2006 01:20 PM

flutter sound is hipcat cool.

And im still asking you how it happens.

joey89 31-08-2006 01:53 PM

I dont know why it happens tj.

But like i said i have seen/heard of it happening before on a TD04 and VF series turbo

BALISTC 31-08-2006 02:30 PM

As for stuffed blades due to BOVs being done up too tightly...I've seen it with my own eyes on a VF22 turbo.

mr_psi 31-08-2006 02:36 PM

is vf22 ceramic or steel wheel?

Mister Two 31-08-2006 02:52 PM

Steel wheel, but very thin blades... I have only seen chipped blades on a 22 never on a td04

agentorange 31-08-2006 05:08 PM

I have a pod filter (HKS triple layer, dry element) and stock bov, however, I only get flutter at very very low boost levels (0.1 bar) otherwise the bov will open. Can only just hear it too.

tuna 31-08-2006 05:14 PM
Steel wheel, but very thin blades... I have only seen chipped blades on a 22 never on a td04
depends on what goes through it...
they dont chip, but they do damage easy.

i havent read the rest of this thread.... but

mine flutters on low boost

hks ssq
