Default gearbox oil

I know this has been raised before but since we've had a few new faces to this forum (old ones please also contribute), what sort of gearbox oil would you use on a 85k kms gearbox?? Redline light or heavy? Motul sythetic? There's been a few issues with the redline stuff i've read..

There are lots of rumours about this Redline shenanigans - how it clogs up parts of the box etc. True/untrue? No idea.

You should be fine if you make regular changes though...

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I've used redline, and thats all I've ever used - couldn't be happier.

The lightweight and heavyweight shockproof is good in the rear diff
MTL90 is the preferred redline product for longevity with syncho's

If left to long the Shockproof congeals and becomes Chunky Smurf Snot. I have seen the inside of gearbox's that have used it, my own included and the congealed Smurf Snot is very apparent. It's not recommended by Redline for synchros, they have a different grade for that.

Tony Flood removed my Redline LWSP gear box oil and filled it with his own recommended grade. He won't say what other than it's a Mobil fully Synthetic. The end result is an oil thats about half the price of the Redline and has a much smoother feel when changing gears.

redline is great but it needs to be changed regularly to avoid gumming up. Its one of the best peforming gear box oils out there but unless your really keen its a bit expensive to keep changing it at every 12,500km service interval.

Im not really sure whats in my one. MMS put it in there at my 100,000km service. All I remember is its from Mobil. Although my 3rd gear syncros were already worn I cant say I am totally happy with the Mobil gear oil. Very Very crunchy into 3rd at high revs.
