Hi Joe.
Its called having a database of the worthy posts.

Ebay can be dirt cheap. I got my Exedy HD Organic Clutch Kit for $500 a while back. For that money Re-Surfacing is not worth it at all.

If he drives hard wouldnt stock be the best because that would put stress on his gbox?

WRXTASY 20-01-2007 02:36 PM

Joey:
The organic clutches allow some degree of slip if you really do a hard launch but will recover when they cool down. That way you do not get the instant shock loading transferred into the gears.
I would rather some small slip with a bit more clamping force than stripping 2nd gear and doing a gearbox re-build.

05wgn:
The gears found in your gearbox used to be considered a desirable upgrade for pre 02 WRX's because of the widened 1st-3rd gear teeth. These previosuly were only found on the 97 onwards JDM STi R & RA's and I think the 99/00 Oz STi's. The 4.444 gearbox final drive ratio also helps.
Not a lot of people are stripping 2nd or 3rd gears these days in their 02-07 WRX gearboxes even with moderate power increases for these very reasons.

Here is another Exedy H/D Clutch Kit (FJK-7123HD) - $550

Btw, the 4.44 you get from the MY02-07 are not the same as the 4.44 you get on the RAs. Shoot me down if i'm wrong with this

joey89 20-01-2007 03:48 PM

Oh sweet as now i know why its always mainly the classics doing box's :(

I know the rear diffs will be different R160(WRX)->R180(STi), but we are talking gearboxes...

Yeh but keep in mind, gc8's are between 7 and 12 years old now... Breakages are to be expected after 7 years of solid thrashing!

Ross @ Autoclutch did my clutch at about 130K kms and its been great for the last 40K kms or so. Except now i think im running into some spigot beaing issues which i put down to wear and tear.

pmh 20-01-2007 09:38 PM

Not all RAs have a R180 rear diff. Some came with R160.
The RA gearsets are inherently bigger than what you'd get on the MY02 onwards
Again, someone can challenge this, as i have never seen a MY02 onwards gear set side by side with an RA set
