Question 5spd Broken Gearbox - Please provide info.

I would like to gather some info on broken 5spd WRX /STi gearboxes to help us all in making the correct upgrade/repair choice.

As some of you know Subaru Oz changed the ratios and gears in the MY02+ WRX to provide improved acceleration and reliability. The tooth pitch of gears 1st-3rd changed and also the face to face width of gears 1st-3rd (increase by 1mm) to match that of the 5spd STi R/RA's. A new 4.444 final drive ratio also helped.

No discussion threads pls. Its a straight survey.

So please provide:

1) MY?? year of WRX/STi and Km:
2) Upgraded Clutch, if so what brand and type (organic, button etc):
3) Do you compete in MC/Drags ?:
4) What gears/selector forks broke ?:
5) What did you upgrade to and cost, where work done ?:
6) Oil Used ?

Thanks .
J

1) MY98 WRX, ~125,000kms
2) Brass button clutch
3) Nope
4) Snapped the output shaft between 2nd and 3rd
5) Shaft replaced with a PPG item, around $2800 including labour
6) Fuchs GearSyn or something like that

I think my situation occured because the box was upgraded with PPG 1-2 straight cut synchro gears. Given they are ridiculously strong, the force just shifted to the next weakest point, the shaft. That being said, RMS said they have never seen it happen before.
