That sounds like pure irony

As a note: Any laptop you buy will be out of date the moment you leave the store.

If you want bleeding edge performance it costs dollars which most people aren't prepared to pay for or do they need (and in a laptop, turns them into a bricktop)

Look at what you want to use the laptop for, what essential criteria you need and generate a minimum spec list then go shopping.

i.e. Screen size, battery life, weight, hard drive space, optical drives, memory, CPU, video card, etc.

You may find that you don't need a Core2Duo and can save some big money.

Couldnt have put it any better myself. There are notebooks starting at $900 and range to as crazy as $5000. Best value for money is around the $1200 - $1500 price range. Price per performance as they say.

I had a laptop previously.

It was just a p4 centrino with 80gb HDD 1g Ram but was light as a feather. 12" widescreen aswell. Was perfect for what I needed (read: wanted) a laptop for. Sitting on the couch infront of the TV surfing the net instead of in the study sitting at my desk.

If you need a laptop for work, then maybe look at leasing one, as when lease period expires you can upgrade to a current model. Could be a good idea?
