Quiet PC Power Supplies
Hey PC gurus!! I am growing sick of my noisy PC making all sorts of noise while it's just sitting there, trying to watch a movie etc. I'm not sure if it's the fan on the power supply or the HDD itself making the noise (I'm not a guru ), it's just a whirring sound. Has anyone got some recommendations and rough prices on quiet parts? Thanx in advance, Phil

If your PC has been sitting there a while, its possible the fans are all gunked up with dust.
It's unlikely it the HDD. Go down to Dick Smiths/Tandy, buy a can of compressed air. Open your case and blow all the dust out of the Power Supply, and CPU Fan .. Then try again

Switch it off. It'll be very quiet then.
Seriously... Sometimes as fans become old the bearings in them slowly fail. Eventually the bearings will give out and it will unbalance the fan blades. This is made worse if the fan is caked up with dust. Clear out your case with a can of compressed air as suggested above. But then with the case open, turn the computer on and listen for any noisy fans. Pull out the broken ones and replace them. Dont forget to check your GPU and CPU fans and give them a concentrated spray of compressed air to clear out dust between the heatsink fins.

All very good advice, from experience its dust.
Simple way to test if it's the HDD. Unplug the molex power cable in the HDD, then turn the PC on. if the noise is still there it's not the HDD. If it is the HDD get a new one fast and copy all your data off before it is too late. If you need some help feel free to PM me
