The Mazda 6 "Luxury sports" pack is pretty much $40k on the money.
There's plenty of options in the Liberty range too, and they're damn nice cars. Nissan Maxima is around the $40k mark. The current model Vectra seems pretty nice too, starts at just under $30 up to $45 for the top shelf unit. |

I had the chance to drive it for 3000 kms around the south west, and drive it on weekends sometimes... Although around the city it seems like it's softer and doesn't turn in as well as the Mazda 6 Lux Sport, (which we also looked at) it handles bumpy country roads really nicely. It has a very linear power delivery so it initially seems slow, especially compared to an early model WRX, It's very quiet too, so an overtaking maneuvre near Albany had me hitting the Rev limiter in 2nd gear, as combined with the linear power delivery, I had thought I wasn't accelerating. (i've read) The turn in has been improved with the '05 model which runs 17s and stiffer springs. A very nice car if you want to go for something which uses less fuel, is not picked on by police, and has a hell of a lot of luxury items for the money... It also uses SFA fuel, according to my Mrs, not much more than the (non VTEC) 1996 EK Civic 3 door she had before. The only things I can fault after 18 months, 1) A pillar is a bit wide and hard to see out of. 2) It's organ type accelerator pedal which make it, for me, harder to heel & toe.. 3) Door locks look too easy to get to, I reckon security could be better, but it's hardly a joyrider special anyway... I can't think of anything else (which I can afford) I'd rather park next to the WRX. BUT Defintitely drive the Mazda 6 Luxury Sport back to back and go for the one you like better, the latest Mazda has a 6 speed and so brings it more in line with the Honda... The other Accord is a softer, bigger more lardy car. The 4 cyl is also less powerful (118 kw vs 140 ) than the Euro although about 3 and a half K cheaper than the equivalent spec (base model) Euro. It's also made in Thailand rather than Japan, which may or may not be a bad thing, but I recall talking to a guy with a Thai Built Civic who was fairly unhappy with it...
