Well I the way I understand it is if the judge loses the case, the drycleaners can then counter-sue him for any damages they might seek, such as emotional distress, legal costs, etc, etc. A counter-sue is a lot more likely to be successful as all you are trying to do is regain some of the damage incurred from being sued in the first place. Given this thing has been plastered all over the worlds media, I'd guess they would get a fair chunk of cash for the 'emotional distress' part.

I only did a little bit of law at Uni and we didn't look at America, but I think they would have to declare bankrupcy after he takes all of their assets, which basically says they don't have to pay anymore because they physically can't. If I were them and the case wasn't looking strong in their favour, I'd leave the country. Its a civil suit so the police can't chase you.
