Default cd player blowing up

Hey people a friends car his cd player shorted out sometime ago
so we put another deck in there. Now originally we thought it may have just been his wiring.

so anyway we wired up another one last night old car very basic wireing. so there was one wire from the positive of battery direct to the memory wire of deck. then the access wire from deck went to the positve of the cig lighter plug.

the earth went to the battery also directly from deck.

speakers are wired direct with new wireing not using anything from facotry harness.

Now with ignition on everything was working great no problems at all turned it off and on fine. As soon as he turned the engine on big puff of smoke came from the deck again.

I put a multimeter on the wires with engine running and on startup no mroe than 14volts was pumping through. So i couldnt see any spikes or the likes
also if its working normally with acces and ignition then there cant be a short i would have thought. but when engine started blew deck up.

any ideas or anything to look at please

thanks

Tim

disconnect the battery and put the meter on the lighter terminal and crank the ignition.
It might be grounding the lighter for some reason when the switch is turned to start.
maybe to turn everything off to get as much current to the starter as possible.

If the hard wire and ground is direct to the battery then the switch wire is all it can be.

also to mention was that when the deck blew last time both the memory and access were wired to the battery . and worked for ages and then one day blew.

this time we wired to the lighter plug so that it woudl work with the keys this time.

so both times it blew only once was with cig lighter.

very weird

Did the deck turn itself off when u started the car (As it should when the starter motor kicks in)? The voltage can fluctuate during startup and fry any electronic circuits like your stereo if they are operating.

Stop taking short cuts!! Positive power should come off the ignition and Earth should go to the chassis at a spot of bare metal (screw, bolt whatever), not straight to the battery. Memory power should come off a constant source such as the cig lighter.
Then if it still blows at least you'll know it wasn't because you were being slack and there is some electrical fault.

Thats how it was wired before we did it. The wires in the dash for the stereo dont even work there is no power what so ever to them. so im guessing previous owner wired to the battery becuase they wernt working. tried following them back goes deep into the harness no join in sight. looked at every wire behind the dash part (not many to choose from old car) no power

i originally was going to wire inthe factory wiring for him that was the whole purpose of the install. but when they didnt work and couldnt find any reason why. then we reverted back to the previous wires. tested them all seemed good wired up tested again worked started motor blew.

I reckon its something with the start circuit.
if the factory wirings rooted, just ground the deck to the nearest screw, continue to use a constant feed from the battery, but with the switch wire of the HU, feed that from the constant too, but with a switch.

so you can flick it on or off.
or just feed both with a constant and use the HU on off button.
thats a pain in the arse but.
