Default A couple of questions

Hi all i have a couple of questions that you may be able to answer for me.

1st) I am thinking about building a box trailer and i need to know how big i can make it? ( single axle ) I have been on the D.P.I. web site but could only find references to boat trailers.

2nd) I am going to be doing some cross country driving early next year and if i build the trailer i will be towing that behind the foz. The Foz is an Auto should i fit an oil cooler to cool the auto trans fluid?

Any Info appreciated

Cheers Druce

on the auto bit

yes... you will find that most if not all autos have a cooler of some sort, either a seperate item or built into the radiator.

They are fairly cheap, $100-$200 depending on size and quality.

upgrading is not a major hassle, get the right hose mount the bugger and hook it up, carefull to check oil levels and ensure the motor is running and warm when you do so...mind you..some manufactures spec the oil checks when the car is off, so double check. Point is, it'll hold more oil when you put in a new cooler, make sure that is flowing in the circuit.

Use good oil too.

I used to tow a lot of glider trailers around when I used to be doing competitions in SA. Most of the single seaters were single axle trailers and had to fit a wing that was about 8 - 8 1/2 meters long. Then of course you have the a frame on the front. Reckon most were about 10 M long.

I think the twin axle, single axle think is more of a weight issue. But remember a single axle wll be more sensitive to load distribution.

There was always a bit of talk that it was pushing the limits of what was allowed but I don't know of anyone who ever had any trouble because of it.

I think it was NSW it was suggested you carry some sort of paperwork with you just in case they gave you a hard time.

Might be worth giving one of the gliding clubs a call.

List of clubs

I'm sure they will all have someone that will know the exact regs.

Second thought one of the caravan manufacturers would also be a good source of infomation.

If you go into the technical section at welshpool they have a photocopy thing there that is title technical guide to small trailers. Grab a copy of that. It is not the best written thing in the world but it give you a fair idea of what you can and cant do.

If you can get away with a single axle do it because they tow soooo much better.

Talk to brendon (wrexxx) he works at welshpool licensing. he might be able to fax you a copy.
