Default Colin McRae believed to be dead

BRITISH former world rallying champion Colin McRae is believed to have been killed in a helicopter crash at his home in Scotland, police say.

Four people died in the crash at Jerviswood near the town of Lanark in southern Scotland, Strathclyde Police said.

One of the other victims may be his five-year-old son.

The Times Online reports that it is feared that McRae's son Johnny, another child and another adult were killed in the crash.

The Times said friends of the family say McRae's wife Alison and their daughter Hollie, 9, were not on board.

"The bodies were found within the helicopter, which is owned by Mr Colin McRae of Jerviswood House, Lanark," police said.

"It is believed (McRae) was on board the helicopter. However, until formal identification has taken place, we will not be able to confirm the identities of those onboard."

Campbell Roy, a member of McRae's management team, told the Sunday Mail: "I haven't had anything confirmed and at the moment it's speculation.

"I'm waiting to speak to the family to find out exactly what's happened.

"We can now confirm that four people were on board the helicopter which crashed in the wooded area in Lanark at 16:10 (1.10am AEST) this afternoon,'' a Strathclyde police spokesman said.

A police source anticipated formal identification might be made this evening (Australian time).

Police cordoned off the area, including a private road up to the McRae family house which is set in several acres of ground.

A Sky News television reporter on the scene said the helicopter came down by McRae's house on land he owned and said he could see smoke rising into the air.

He said sources told him it was a Twin Squirrel helicopter registered to McRae.

McRae, 39, held a pilot's licence and travelled by helicopter on a regular basis.

The Scot won the 1995 World Rally Championship and was the runner-up in 1996, 1997 and 2001.

He was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by the Queen in 1996.

McRae hailed from a well-known motor racing family in Scotland.

His father, Jimmy, is a five-time British rally champion and his brother, Alister, is also former British rally champion.
