Computer PSU Question (nerd alert!)
I bought a new graphics card which requires 350W to run, however my PSU only supplies 300W. I tried it and everything works fine, however I'd still like to upgrade the PSU to 400W or so.
I know the PSU supplies the DVD burner, HDs, floppy drive and so on, with those white connectors (black for SATA). The question is, the connector that connects the PSU with the motherboard....are there different connector types or just one standard one??

Should be just one standard one for motherboard afaik - It's usually the biggest one coming out of the power supply.
Edit: Forgot to mention - The gfx shouldn't be drawing a huge amount of power unless you're using it for heavy tasks such as gaming.

Most new PSU now come with 24pin motherboard connecters.
There is also 4 pins at one end of the connecter that will unclip if your motherboard only uses 20pins. |

if you get the new style P4 PSU's yes, because as mentioned you can unclip the extra connecter if your mobo doesnt support 24pin
it will fit

G'day, If upgrading PSU, theres no point in buying a 400w from a 300w... Might as well look a bit further for hardly no extra cash and get something around the 550w mark. This way you will be a little bit more furture proof. When it comes to graphics cards, it depends on what card you are using, the 8800 needs 2 6pin connectors since it draws so much power and u need at least a 500w PSU for this, however any PSU will fit any board since these days you are giving more connector plus and options....shouldnt be a problem

Ive found that a sure sign your power supply is inadequate, is put everything under load, your computer will either A) Reboot/Blue Screen or B) You will hear the fan(s) slowing down (as I did in mine)
There are some sites that do a rough calculation for you, if you enter in what you have. My suggestion is buy a decent one though, dont go for the cheapest one, every cheap one Ive had hasnt lasted very long. |
