Default External HD Help

Hey peoples,

Yesterday i accidentally kicked the chord for my external HD and it fell over with some force, now it will fire up but it makes a wierd beeping noise, but its like a rubbing noise, it also makes the USB 'beep" when plugged in and can be 'safely removed' yet it wont recognise it in My Computer and i cant access it

My question is, will anyone be able to fix it, (Western Digital 500gb) and if not, can i somehow transplant the old hard drive itself into a new unit as theres some important stuff on there that i need, and my porn.

Cheers all

First thing i'd be doing is taking it out of the external case, and connecting it directly to your computer system via the mainboard - This will at least eliminate the electronics of the caddy, and permit you to continue trouble shooting.

You may get lucky, and all will be good - If it spins up and the system detects the drive at bootup and/or via the BIOS, you may be in luck.

If it doesn't, the only other thing you can do is try find a drive that is *exactly* the same, and unscrew the controller, and replace it with the damaged drive. If that still doesn't work, something inside the drive, mechanically is fucked, and so are you.

if there is important info in the HD and u wanna recover it.. please do not try start it again and again. as it might scratch the disk and might not be able to recover the data anymore..... bring it to someone....

Adam, Like Kenneth said if there is important information on it take it to some where like Navada computers or PLE computers where their tech heads can rip it open and immediately back it up....

Cheers Phil

If the drive is dead, it's very expensive for data recovery ..

To connect it to your computer, you'll need either a SATA or IDE cable, depending on what kind of drive it is.
