Hey All

thanks heaps for the responces. The above package is just starting point but now with you have all told me i think i will:

- go for the 8800 GT
- Bigger tower with a better power supply
- deff a second HD - i was always going to do that.

Sethor: Whats OC?

With all the above info- I might even look at buying the parts myself. I will have a look this weekend and see what I can source and then see what you all think..

Cheers again for all you help... i know heaps about computer but nothing about the hardware

Cheers

Chris

I'd go 4x1GB RAM.

Dont matter that 32 bit Vista will not see all 4GB but it will see 3.2GB - 3.5GB.

RAM is cheap so wont cost much to double.

The more RAM the better.

edit: OC = Overclock

The better brand rams will be a little expensive, usual base rams are fairly cheap. A bigger case is always better, seperating all the components helps.

If your computer fucks up, you 9 times out of 10 have not installed the component properly. Its pretty hard to stuff it up to be honest. Sometimes you get a dud, but like with austins, i take it back, tell them excactly what happened (providing i did screw it myself by rubbing myself on a rubber mat and touching all the parts) and they will usually sympathise.

Out of sevrel comps ive built for my family and I, i think ive had ONE stick of ram that was 3 years old corrupt and not let me install windows XP. One in about 5-10 years, not bad i reckon. A main missed practice is people not putting the thermal paste on the CPU when connecting the fan onto it.

Just built a gaming system for my son as follows:

MSI P6N Diamond mobo
Core2 Quad Q6600 CPU @ 2.4GHz
2 x 2Gb DDR2 RAM PC6400
2 x 8800GT in SLi
Silverstone Strider 750W fully modular PSU SLi/Crossfire ready
Antec 900 case (brilliant case, bought from PLE along with CPU)
SATA Pioneer DVDRAM burner
3 x IDE to SATA converters for the IDE HDDs

Monitor, keyboard, mouse & HDDs from old system installed into above, cost was just under $2000. Sourced from eBay USA (Mobo), eBay Taiwan (RAM), online computer shop Sydney (8800GTs), eBay HK (converters), local shop (DVD burner), PLE (CPU & PSU).

Saved about $700 over normal retail!! Build your own if ya wanna save $$$

Hey westoz, those sata converters, what are they worth? And how excatly do they work? Do you just plug in your IDE HD into an adaptor and plug it into your sata ports on your mobo? I have the current problem of having a DVD rom, DVD burner and a IDE HDD while the mobo only supports 2 IDE but 4 SATA. Need to convert a IDE HDD to sata so i can plug in my DVD rom to, errr, 'use' dvds etc

you might as well just buy a new SATA DVD RW burner which are $37 or just buy a new SATA HDD which is about $120 for a 500Gb.

I was told (and was unsure at the time) that there was no such thing as a sata driven DVD writer. Only HDD's came in sata. This was possibly about 9 months ago, but seemed strange that my mate told me there was, and this computer store dude told me there was not.

I bought one last week, the guy at the computer store was most likely trying to move the IDE stock out the door as SATA has taken over. http://www.austin.net.au/PriceGuide/...PTICAL+DEVICES

Id goto to Netplus computers in ossie park - much cheaper.

If your doing alot of encoding then the quad core is the way to go... but if u can wait a month - the new quad cores are coming out so id go with them... the Q6600 is nearly a year old now...

Get 2GB x 2 stick of generic ram
Get a decent branded power supply - a Corsair 620 is very good.
If you like to play games aswell... then invest in a new 8800 GTS 512 MB G92 chip. Foxcomp computers sell these online for as little as $400.
Get a Gigabyte X38 chip motherboard.

PLE are prob one of the most expensive shops in perth at this stage
