Bit like if you die in a car crash, your organs are useless, you have to actually die in a hospital or be kept on life support till you get there before they can use them...........you have to be fresh dead, not stale dead.

That is true for internal organs, but not other body parts.
Skin, bone & other body parts can be harvested up to 24hrs after death.
These can be put to great use in research, burns victims, etc.
