Going off road
have been reading a few 4wd mags lately and it has got me wondering......
what would be a good subaru for off road weekend duties. my favourite would be an Impreza Sportswagon; dual range n/a 2.0l as bits would be interchangeable with my rex. (wheels and trims etc). has anyone ever driven one? taken it off road? or can you show me some good off-road set-ups using an L-series or other good off-road capable subaru? Pics, specs and feedback greatly appreciated. and NO..... I will not lift kit the evo4. Toni

I'm in the process (very slowly) of building a 95 WRX Hatch & turning it into an off roader, it's a bit of a mongrel & made out of at least 5 different cars..MY95 running gear, rails, firewall, floor & dash, MY98 front panels, MY00 lights & bumper, MY97 JDM STI rear cut from the A pillars back with matching interior & the piece de resistance - a genuine unknown age JDM WRX Gravel swing out rear wheel carrier, just needs paint & windscreen for rego then I'll put some Fozza suspension in it with some King high springs & possibly a lift kit.
I'm sick of using my Libbo in the dunes because it gets full of sand...still dirty from easter. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=TKrsF-2JS3M

The big killer of the Subaru will always be ground clearance. If you are a fan of the brand they woudl be a great project, but for off road performance there are much more suitable starting points.

the impreza's low range isnt as good as an old L series or MY wagon's d/r box. its still not bad tho. but if you wanted something you wouldnt be scared to scratch you cant go wrong with an L series, lift kit, big wheels and a welded diff
newer EJ series have the power but sometimes not the clearance.

out of the SUV range regarding ground clearance :
forester 225mm CRV 185mm RAV4 195mm VITARA 200mm KLUGER 206mm there you go get a forester since u wanna subaru and has the highest ground clearance in the suv range |

i got an impreza, only been on the beach 2 or 3 times, seems to do the job.. definitely can't do it now because of my ride height though.
Thinking of doing all the swaybars and taking it auto-kharning.. the transfer case in lo range should be fun for that ! |

I work off the beaten track a whole heap for work and used my GT Forester for about a year till I got my company ute (hilux) and my Forester went every where.
I am far more confident taking my GT with no low range off road than I am in the new Hiilux with a shithouse low range. Seriously. Lighter, faster, more power. The biggest issue was ground clearance which can easily be fixed. Lift kit, bigger tyres, chop the guards for room for the bigger tyres ect. It will test your off road skills a whole heap more but the fun is in the challenge. For me, the best starting point for an off road beast is an older Rangerover. Ive owned 2 and both were awesome off road. Last edited by redly rocket; 02-07-2008 at 10:28 AM. |
