Default Anyone want a job on the mines?

Here's something you guys might find interesting.

I've been talking to my friend who works up north on the mines. His job is a "shut down" worker, which basically means he is part of a fly in / fly out maintenance crew on the mine sites.

They pay pretty insane money. God dam. He offered me a job for like 100k a year. What do you say to that? does anyone work on the mines here? Seriously I've been tempted to give up what I'm doing and go... and I'm far from a hands on guy.

Apparently there is a pretty big shortage of people at the moment so even newcomers are getting paid ridiculous money, something like $500/day, 2 weeks on 2 weeks off.

They're looking for about half a dozen people. Ideally tradespeople, such as fitters, mechanics, overhead crane operators, electricians, riggers, scaffolders, boilermakers etc etc. People who have experience in those kinds of areas or are willing to learn.

Thought I'd put it up for everyone, it is a lot of money and could be a pretty awesome opportunity for someone. Plus if I find a few people I get a small finders fee, which would almost guaranteed go towards an iPhone.
Anyone interested?

You'll find people in these trades are well aware of the money available working away.
They'll either be working away already, or don't want to work away.

So are people "who aren't hands on people" that come to work because their mate got them a job.

^^^ Agree with both..
I do shutdown work but as an ESO with a sweet roster and great pay.
The time away is nothing compared to what I did in The Navy.
I work with a small crew that are well trained and we don't put up with F*&kheads, they get moved along pretty quickly.

For anyone who hasn't done this type of work before and gets in, I have one piece of valuable advice for you

Don't stick your hand or fingers where you wouldn't stick your cock

Trust me mate I wasn't being a smartass. I've done fitouts/shut downs etc etc. I could've easily lost my left hand when I was changing out a couple of heavy duty springs on an impact bed (it sits at the bottom of a hopper where all the dirt/ore falls down to before going up a conveyor. While we had it jimmyed up I went to stick a block of metal in to take the weight while we worked on it. Guy on the crowbar lost his grip and 700 odd kg came down. I'm lucky it only caught me on the thumb nail and turned it black as the ace of spades. Hand my hand and forearm in there halfway to my elbow. Ever since then I told them to stick their shut downs up their ass and leave me on the machines

Another bit of advice I tell people tempted by money offered from mining companies - work out how many hours a week you'd be working and your hourly rate - add to the fact that you are away from family and friends and you are working in fairly harsh conditions. If you are happy with that figure (and it's A LOT better $ per hour then what you get in Perth), then give it a shot. A lot of times, I see guys going away not realizing that if they had worked the same amount of hours in Perth, they'd be earning similar money without the compromise of leaving home.

My 2c...

Darren
