Default MP3 car audio question

A couple of Q's:

1)whats the maximum size CD you can get. Mine are standard 750mb, but I heard you could get 900mb+? Is that right? Do they use some of compression that may make them incompatible with car stereos?

2)Most of my MP3s are around 3mb, is there a simple way of trimming down the file size to enable me to get more songs on a disc? Is there 3rd party software that would do this or would something like Itunes, WMP do it?
