If you want it done for you, gimmie a buzz.. its what i do
XM is V8. just a more windows friendly interface.

easy to learn, but you have experience in V8 and are only doing a small job it may not be worth screwing your heaad around it.

Microstation is the most useless CAD program i have used. Why the uni insists on choosing it over AutoCAD i have no idea. AutoCADs easy to use once you learn the basics.

cheers fred and kymbo...

I dont think that its going to be a viable option now as the expense just dosent justify it over getting something pre-made... But im still looking for a cheaper alternative but having to construct the manifold in metal before it can be cast dosent apeal to me..

haha Blair, that is the opinion all AutoCADers have about Microstation, and MS users will say the same about AutoCAD.

As a person who uses AutoCAD, 12D and MS every day, i can quite easily say, there are things about all 3 that make them better than the others. MS is easy to use once u learn the basics and there are things you can do in MS that are so much harder to do in Acad, and visa versa.. but i have to admit, i prefer AutoCAD every day of the week, only because I know more about it and i know how to use it more...

But without the other 2, my job would be alot more difficult.

No worries Tino. If you need anything done, you know how to reach me.

Perth is only a microstation town because BHP and RIO both use MS. And they are the biggest mining conglomerates in Australia, and have alot of people working with and for them, and they demand they use Microstation as well.

Also, Bentley have a training institute here, but CoralCAD has just bought their training over here, so i think you'll find AutoCAD will make a comeback

and Western Power, Horizon Power, Alinta, BHPNW, Alcoa all use Microstation.

the only client we have at work for AutoCAD is Watercorp. But watercorp dont have a set standard, they use either. we only use AutoCAD because we have to have at least one client for the program.

i started off as an AutoCAD person. had to teach myself to use Microstation 7, hated it with a passion.

tought myself V8, love it.

i am the CAD Coordinator for a drafting office and we use both Microstation and AutoCAD. I do most of the training aswell. Alot of people pick up Microstation alot easier than AutoCAD. believe it or not

9/10 people prefer Microstation. AutoCAD is a resource hog, it does have some awesome feautes in it which Microstation is lagging on though.

plus with the way ive written the Microstaion system, ive integrated alot of AutoCAD like tools, then improved them. but most are now in XM anyway.

and i HATE how AutoCAD update their file format every 3 years.
make everyone buy the new program to give the shareholders something

Lol... Watercorp doesn't have set standards! Dreaming! You obviously haven't read WCX 8.1 Drafting Manual and used the DNS to lodge drawings into the Water Corp System as complete. Its a cunt!

I am about to make a mapping file (in microstation, coz its easier than writing a lisp routine in AutoCAD) to convert our surveys from GHD standard into Watercorp standard... fun times

must be Watercorp by themselves then?

We're doing work for W2Wa and PPS. both joint ventures and they dont care about the file format as long as it looks good.
