I was in London recently for work and hired a car from Avis. I've worked in London before and have a UK license which is a plastic card like the WA one. Apparently they used to have a paper one a few years back. Anyway I showed them the UK DL and they refused to take it, saying I needed a paper one as well as the plastic one. The paper one doesn't even have a photo on it and besides when I got my UK license they had stopped issuing the paper one. I tried to argue with this bonehead pointing all this out and the only thing he said I could do was pay $20 and they could do a DVLA license check. I was about to do that, then had a think and asked if they'd take an Aussie DL, which suprisingly he did! Same type of card.. fucking bizarre.
