Working with you to get the tax bonus payment to people

The Australian Government has today announced it will make a one-off tax bonus payment to eligible people.

Many of your clients will be eligible to receive this bonus.

The Government has indicated the legislation will be introduced in the next few days.
The Tax Office is responsible for making the proposed payments once the legislation is law. We expect to begin making payments from early April 2009.

If your clients call to find out if they will get the payment, click here for a simple guide to working it out from their notice of assessment.

To be eligible to receive the proposed payment people need to have lodged their 2007-08 income tax return by 30 June 2009 and be an Australian resident. Some conditions apply for minors.

If you have clients who have not already lodged and you are concerned that this will put pressure on meeting your lodgment program please call us urgently.

Your clients will also be eligible for the payment if an extension of time to lodge beyond 30 June 2009 has been granted before the measure becomes law. Once the measure is law, any client who receives an extension to lodge after 30 June 2009 will not be entitled to the payment.

We will work out if people are eligible for the payment and how much they're entitled to by using the information provided in their 2007-08 tax return.

One of the first things we have done is set-up a special phone number so people who use tax agents, but who want to receive the payment directly, can register their personal bank account details for this payment. The number is 1300 686 636.

All changes of address and bank account details should be made by the middle of March to ensure people's money goes into the right bank account or the cheque is delivered to the correct address in early April 2009.

For more information please see the media release or call 1300 686 636 if you have any questions.

We are working with your representatives to find the best way to get the tax bonus payment to eligible people with minimum inconvenience to you and your clients.

Thank you for your assistance.

Michael D'Ascenzo
Commissioner of Taxation

trying to use that guide. Now when it says ADD them together does it mean add them as -$8000 or whatever since they are DR or what? I'm confused.

from what i understand yes as long as you are tax paying, so earning more then 6k, coz u dont get taxed if u earn less then 6k a year. So yes part time and casual will be eligible if earning more then 6k, not 100% sure on that but its the understanding ive gotten from what ive heard.

do non working/and working tertiary students qualify? from what ive heard they do?
