PM 'jezzamcbezza' he owns and operates http://www.delonixradar.com.au/ local too.

He will know the best radar detector on the market at the moment. Your parents should budget about $700 . That will hopefully include a vertical bracket.

What ever will you do about the blue inserts in your seats, as they will not be matching either?!?!

+1 for Jezza, the man definitely knows his stuff!

I'm sure he'll back me up in saying that:
  • if you have the money, you can't go past a Valentine 1 (over $800 atm)
  • the Escort X50 mounted vertically is the next best option. (around $500 + bracket)
  • Apart from those two detectors, the Bel STi is 'ok' but unnecessarily expensive due to being stealth (not needed here as detectors are legal), the rest of the Beltronics (and Whistler) range can't take on the Escort in performance nor price (and cannot get anywhere near the V1 in performance)

Do not buy from local audio shops as they have absolutely no idea and charge through the roof for inferior products!!!
Here's a bunch of links / videos to help you decide:

I have V1 I bought from Jeremy and I only use it on long trips as I am scared that if I leave it in view in the car it will get pilfered. I was in a rush from Kal to Perth on Friday just gone and it paid for itself 5 times....... Then on Saturday morning off to Albany....Only paid for itself once.....

It still picks up the automatic doors as you drive through bumfu%k little towns though.
