Question RBT Officer asked a strange question??

Hey all,

Just thought I would ask here, I was little puzzled last night by a question I was asked on the way back home after the REXPO/P-WRX sticker pickup at Powis.

Story goes like this:
Main St/Wanneroo Rd Lights RBT unit outside Big Rock Toyota. I get pulled over and get asked the usual,
"Have you had a drink tonight?" (NO)
next question is what puzzled me,
"Have you had a cigarette in the last 5-10mins?" (ummmm... about 10 mins ago maybe)
"Ahhh it should be ok, take a breath sir...blah blah"

Has anyone had this question asked to them at a RBT unit??

Have they found that essence of smoking a cigarette puts off the reading in the breatherliser??

Yea mate, bosses on the mines used to say that shit too before a random blow in the bag. Allegedly having a smoke right before it can give it a false reading, same as chewing gum. I have done both just to see what happened and exactly fuck all did. I even blew a lung full of smoke into the one at work and still got 0.000 BAC I believe it to be a myth.

Besides any device which can be tricked by other chemicals when testing just for alcohol should not be put into use as a means of establishing guilt.

Potentially a lot of things you do immediately before a test can affect the reading. It is better to ask the question first. If they ask if you have just had a smoke then your likely to say no BUT I have just had this or that.

If you get a positive you get put on the fancy bells and whistles machine to determine guilt or innocence. If you don't want to believe the reading you may always request a blood sample. Can't imagine anyone who got a negative requesting a blood test!!!

Occasionally if you are eating a white bread roll, then blow sometimes can read. Also, if you eat some rum and raisin icecream registers. (we tried this on some breathylisers at work)
Not the same as the ones police use, but still....

Some foods and chemicals register on the machines. Eat a cherry ripe as you go though a booze bus and wait for hillarity to ensue...

fair enough every one reacts differently to different things, but still - some myths are a bit far fetch. as ifff some of them could even be considerably true.
