Exactly my friend... the 135i is not lacking in brakes imho... first non CSL BMW to carry larger than 2 piston sliding calipers!!! 6 Pot front 2 Pot Rear and they brake really well... i pushed one for three laps straight at phillip island and had no fade on standard pads etc

Yeah, fair comment Rob...both cars in std form would be very close. ( I kept catching and passing them at the BMW Barbagallo day, though I guess my STI isn't quite standard). The 135i is a lovely car (and looks nicer than a Betty) and would be right up on my my list, though an STI is a bit cheaper. ... But the new M3...superb!...the sound of the V8 under power is something else...but we are talking a bit more $'s.

I reckon i'd take a pristine E46 M3 over the 135.. i just cant bring myself to ever owning a small car - ariel atom/blown lotus/370z excluded - but small sedans just dont do it for me... im sure the bimmer is not your average small car but the M3's are just horn!

If it was me personally, I would pick the E46 M3 over the 135i, for emotive reasons only. The 135i is faster, no doubt stops better, handling I would imagine would be pretty close, it's going to be cheaper to maintain, easy to get power upgrades, newer, etc, but the sound and the look of the M3 are just An E46 M3 is my dream car, yet I have just about no desire at all to own a 135i.....

The 135i has ridiculously good brakes. I did a few back to back AHG runs in my old Evo and my old mans 135i, and there was absolutely no comparison. I was continually outbraking myself in the 135i.

M3 has far more road presence than a 135 ever could. It would be a no-brainer for me- M3.

If you want something that's fast and tuneable get an evo...

Having had a good drive of both the E46 M3 and the new M3 it would be the M3 for me hands down. The engine is incredible for NA in the E46. Just need to find a good one.....The 135i just doesn't have the looks for that sort of price tag.

That faults list for the E46 M3 is pretty sobering though!

Haven't driven either, so i can't really comment, but the 135i is one confused looking car, imo. The E46 M3, on the other hand, looks classy and tough as fark.
