Smile Joining Motorkhana

Hi everyone,

I'm joining a khanacross with 2 other mates this year and am thinking on some possibilities for cars.

Basically you buy old shit heaps and thrash them around. I was thinking KE70 rolla, or a old civic. Looking at past history it seems Hyundai Excel's are the car of choice, but I refuse to buy one. Any thoughts or tips from rally kings??

Harry.

What's the budget?
A mate started in an excel but they've moved to a 323/TX3 turbo. A sh*trade will take a beating.

Why not buy a bunky early impreza? Run it FWD as is with whatever donk you have, then later power up with a EJ25N/A and then when you're ready to go rallying cage it and WRX it. That way whatever you spend on development over the years isn't wasted when you want to get more serious.

Or just go to Pickles auctions and buy a damaged Excel twin cam like everyone else if you just want to have fun for cheap. Everything RWD will be old, rooted, rusty, slow or expensive.

Brainwave!!! What about a VN Commodore? they sell for ~$250 and it would be a skid machine!! 15" rally tyres are very easy to get for cheap or free even. Find a manual one if you can and weld the diff.

from bushbashing experiences...
xe/xf...ea/eb falcons, vh,vk,vl,vn,vp commodores all go alright, but too big, end up hitting trees
charades dont last.... cv joints, same with lasers,
honda auto wagon was great, 2 sp auto...hondamatic, il hit a rock and cracked a hole in the tranny.
still trying to kill a corolla after over a year now, have a santas hat as an air filter....
xf ute was great, until stuck it into reverse at 90k. didnt work out too well.
92 lancer was ok
but the best of all....DATSUN 120
little burnout machines! welded diff
usual cost $50, and if that doesnt work then a carton of piss usually does.

..aaand you have my attention.

Dave up (or down) at RMS does those khanacrosses and motorkhanas in an old Corolla. He reckens the thing is impossible to break. just impossible. It's done something like 3 years in a row with only one thing needing replacing. And he reckens they belt it... hitting other cars and all.

Reminds me of when I was 18 - 20. Used to go door knocking around lockridge and beechboro areas. If there was an unlic car out the front I would ask if it run and if they want $50 for it. Surprisingly quite often I got a yes on both.
Geminis and coronas were the main cars I used. Never got into motorkhana as such, just a good day of thrashing at the pines.

Budget is around $1000 maybe a little more. Just got told on FWD and RWD vehicles are allowed.

Racing a FWD Impreza would be good as I'm a Subaru apprentice. But thinking power the weight ratio, might be a little harder??

Excels are goood for the price, but i really dislike them ahah. Then again it's gonna get thrashed so doesn't really matter

Do you need a fire extinguisher when racing>?

A GC3 Impreza with an old series 1 Liberty EJ22 would go like the clappers and cost fug all to build. Drum brake rear end so handbrakies aplenty!

Me and my mate built a Khanacross car for use at the Beverley (BORMSA) series. It involved a series 1 RX7 that previously had a 12A flywheel explode and pierce the floor and bonnet. Race prep consisted of bash down/bog up holes and rust. Instal Commodore Ecotec 3.8V6 and auto trans, Hilux diff with 4.8;1 welded centre, Falcon mags on the rear, commodore front end and mags, rally tyres, half cage, old crappy race seat from cash converters. Brush on a coat of flat black and we have a car that would make Mad Max proud. She goes good but handling is a bit 'unique' You need 2+ cans of Redbull to give it full throttle on gravel!
