Anyone thought about selling for an old school Cruiser?

Lately I've been looking at alot of Old School cruisers/Muscle cars as opposed to the STI. There are pro's and con's to both so I'm just wondering if anyone else has thought about this?

Opinions? Thoughts?

fobz 12-05-2010 04:33 PM

Some of them look awesome when kept in original spec. Nothing worse
than newer rims etc on an old school car. Broke my heart once when I saw
a Mustang with the latest commonwhore type rims fitted... YUCK.

One thing that does always make me giggle is that the seats in really old cars
never had head rests that came above the door line. So from behind it looks like
the driver is sitting on a milk crate.
:)

Tommosaurus 12-05-2010 04:39 PM

Love the old school American cars.

I would love a Dodge Challenger/Plymouth Baracuda myself.
I reckon it will cost a fair whack more than an STI to get something half decent though.
Best bet would be to import one yourself. I looked a while ago and some of the local prices for American cars were extortionate.

Sayers 12-05-2010 04:47 PM

One of my rellies has a few older cars, and they can be fun to drive.

Biggest problem I can see is that, unlike a WRX, they're definitely not a practical daily car.

If you're putting them on club plates and have room to park them undercover, no problem.

American Dave 12-05-2010 04:53 PM

mate owns this beauty...cost him a reasonable sum and he only drives it on Sundays, def not a daily driver though.

WHITEMY08 12-05-2010 05:31 PM

I had a 65 mustang years back and driven heaps as I also worked in the american car conversion scene.
If you want one as a Sunday driver they are great, daily is another story.

RICOCHET 12-05-2010 05:33 PM

:sign18: At those wheels on that car.

Im looking at a few different cars, 67 Impala, VG Valiant 2dr Lincoln Continental (like the one of entourage). I love the speed of the STI but the cruiser type is starting to appeal to me.

As for it being a daily it doesn't bother me as the STI doesnt get driven to work anyway.

GTB Liberty 12-05-2010 07:37 PM

Surprisingly, I manage a warehouse where there are two separate units with people storing/rebuilding American cars. A 50s Buick, a T Bird is there , a Cadillac, etc.

Really enjoy checking out the warehouse.

Hurtenstein 12-05-2010 07:55 PM

Ever since the Matrix ive wanted a '65 Conti...
I came VERY close to buying one.

Id also settle for '64 too =)

silvascoob 12-05-2010 08:47 PM

well the american economy is still in the toilet so now seems as good a time as any to go shopping over there!

_daz_ 12-05-2010 08:52 PM

my uncles weekender, set him back a pretty penny or two

honestly if the wrx just isn't doing it for you anymore, it must be time for a change, so long as the right cruiser becomes available at the right price i'd say go for it

see if this works, first time attempting to post images...

coming from a family of old muscle cars... xw gt, xy phase 3 gt , xb gs 351, td cortina 302(347) engineered, hg monaro, xd 351 and now bf mk2 gt #201... not cheap toys.
wouldnt do it unless your earning good money

RICOCHET 12-05-2010 11:18 PM

lol, it wouldnt really be that much different to owning and modding the rex. Plus I own the STI so it would be a matter of selling and buying a cruiser

Some damn nice cars your family has, my folks were happy to get a 1400 motor into their Datsun 1200 so needless to say when I came home from buying a Mitsubishi Express van with a XYGT instead I wasn't too popular :laughing4

But back on topic, I know it's considered blasphemy modding an old car but if you plan on driving it regularly then I'd recommend swapping out the carby (or carbies) with a bolt-on EFI setup so you don't have to go through all the crap that old cars make you go through when you are late for work and just want to turn the key and drive :sign13:

Just remember that your STI is 5 years old (judging from your profile) compared to car that is 30/40+.
Unless you're happy having a muscle shitter, you will most likely need to invest a lot of money to make it a fanny creamer.

Even if you get a car that is mechanically sound, it's all the small things that can add up or at the very least just annoy the piss out of you (crappy interior, dodgy door seals, creaky doors, fucked switches etc)

RICOCHET 13-05-2010 01:58 PM

Yeah, I owned a B4 before the STI that I put 4 different motors into 3 different GBs, 8 Battery's and a shit tin of other money into. I don't mind the work, as I can actually work on older cars and also it won't be a daily. But I know what your saying, it would be a labour of love rather than a mode of transport as we still have the Missus Xtrail

JDM_STYLE 23-05-2010 10:31 PM

If I had some spare coin id buy a 67 Impala, awesome piece of
motoring right there!!! :D

RICOCHET 24-05-2010 12:38 AM

haha I've been looking at a few lately actually. Have to wait until Wednesday to find out what's going to happen.

AWDmoke 24-05-2010 07:12 AM

So, now that the STi is written off, I'm torn between these to vehicles
The purple is a 1970 VG has won multiple trophies for interior and paint. Has a good solid 265 with extractors and 3 speed auto. I have photoshoped the white walls in as that's look I would be going for just a bit lower.

The wagon needs a bit of work, ie has a few little bits of surface rust and motor is getting a bit old.

WRXRW 27-05-2010 10:34 PM

brave choice but if its in our heart then do it!

i think cars speak to people in different ways. im slowly working my way to buying what is in my eyes my poster child car. some may laugh at my choice but ever since year 10 when its first came out circa 1992 nothing has spoken louder to me than an eb gt falcon. by years end in hoping to turn that motoring dream into reality. an ultra low km black pearl factory sunroof and manual shift will do my soul wonders.

real man dreams not pipe dreams of owning an sv miura although one powerball could change that!

Terry.Wrist 27-05-2010 10:56 PM

Personally I'm a fan of the wagon but how bad is its condition? Is it reflected in the price?

Nice Ramon, have you got that car lined up or is it the dream combo?

AWDmoke 28-05-2010 07:16 AM

I have always had a thing for the Valiant 2 doors. Shared a house with a guy who had a VG with a 383 in it. The wagon just doesn't compare, except in practicality.

gtr_eta 28-05-2010 07:33 AM

All old cars will need constant TLC
Valiant is a good choice, I have almost finished a Vc v8 Regal with a pretty wild stroked 318 (390ci)
Also if buying from east make sure you go over and have a look Make sure you have more than one too look at most old cars people think they are more than what they really are,Be ready to be disapointed at what most people think it just needs a little bit this and its got alittle bit of that ..

Tommosaurus 28-05-2010 09:06 AM

Go the valiant!

RICOCHET 28-05-2010 12:33 PM

I've got my Mum and her Partner looking at the coupe tomorrow. He has owned a few Vals in the past and knows what to look for. Ive spoken to the owner about the wagon and it needs a bit more than I am willing to put in espesially with the lack of time that I usually have.

2 door it is!

Any thoughts on the white walls? Also where in perth would I be able to get some?

Bob 28-05-2010 12:52 PM

For whitewalls.

There's a place on Dowd St, Welshpool near the corner of Kewdale Rd, called Antique Tyres WA (ph:6161 3709), they do whitewalls, redlines etc, can even paint them onto existing tyres.
