Default House Solar Power

How many people Have solar power installed ?

What return does it give you on your bill ?

What size system ?

How much did the install cost you from your own pocket ?

See different ads on tv about it, Always interested however every time I look at what i might need seems to expensive for what return I could get. But then maybe I don't understand What i am looking at.

My average power bill is $500 - $580 every 2 months.

If a system with an investment of 4k could give me a discount of at least $200 per bill Id be happy .
But hard to know. So hoping to get some feedback from people who may have systems installed.

Thanks

tim

I haven't got one installed so won't tell you from first hand experience, however the reason why i didnt get one is this:

the only way you'll get rebate if your household income is less than $100k (correct me if im wrong). Even with the discount $4k for a 1kw system is a lot.

Lets put it into perspective, average running cost of a frigi air con is around $2-$3 an hour. Most systems will be around 10kw-15kw (and before i get slammed by other electrical engineers, i know it's not exactly how you calculate it but to simplify things...) hence during a perfectly sunny day you will get 1kw out of it per hour so you will need 10-15 hours of perfect sun to run ur aircon for an hour (so around $2 per day...roughly).

Keep in mind that in winter the performance will be reduced. Also if we pay lets say 20 cents per unit to synergy i highly doubt that they'll "buy back" the energy from those solar panels (whilst you're at work for instance and not using the electricity) for the same price...hence the value is reduced again. To me it looks like at least 5 years before they pay themselves off hence i CBF.

My mate has a 2kw system on his roof.. its a fully removable system so he can take it with him if he moves. He has it up on his roof but his house is not yet complete, therefore he is not living it. He said in the 6 months it will take to complete, he expects to be almost 1 year into the negative on power.

I think its a great way to go, but it's got to be worth it, with the rebate! Otherwise, what's the point.

I will be solaring up my next house.

It's only worth it if you plan to be there for a few years. Selling the power back to the grid is the key to reducing your bills.

this is why my mate chose the 2kw system. Obviously, when you are not home, during the day, the system is just putting power back on to the grid. He did some maths and estimates, he will send double his usage back to the grid each day with this system.

Also, my grandma has one on her roof. Power bill for 3months was something like 90c. She is in a complex of units which all have systems on their roofs

hard to compare though as your grandma probably pays the lower pensioner rate...

john kato - can you let us know what the buy back rate is vs what you normally pay per unit of electricity?? also maintenance costs + insurance etc.

For the people who cannot claim the rebate (like me) it's something like 10 grand for the 2kw or 2.5kw system. I pay around $200 a month in power bills so 10 grand is good to pay for more than 5 years of electricity. Unless i can get a pensioner room mate for a month or so

Not only that but your gran wouldn't use a whole lot of power,

Compared to say a house that has plasma's, multiple computers, spa, down lights, pools, etc etc.
