My friends are lucky to get 2 days life out of the battery, if you know how to manage the phone you can easily get more out of it.

Turning off services and devices, e.g. mobile roaming, gps, wifi, animated backdrops, etc, has got me to 4 days without a charge.

All in all, the Desire is a decent phone and its hard to not recommend it.

I have the HD2 also. Love the phone, but as it is new, I am lucky to get 1-2 days out of the battery My wife has the 3Gs and will most likely upgrade to 4 once her contract is up. Again though, she normally only gets 2-3 days out of her battery. Less with Wifi or bluetooth enabled.

iPhones would win as far as availability of apps goes. I was reading somewhere that Andriod has a higher market share over iPhone (i think it was 18% vs 14%), but there are more apps available on iPhone than Android (i think it was 240,000 vs 100,000) - At the moment anyway.

Although, you would probably find the amount of apps means shit all compared to the amount of USEFUL apps. I dont care about "fart detector" and "ghost in the picture" apps, I only care about apps like iTunes remote control, mapping / GPS software etc.

My advice, try to find people with the 2-3 phones you are looking at and have a play. See what useful apps they have, what they cost, then make up your own mind.

I think you will be happy with either the iPhone OR Android based smart phones. I think the main point is one you have gone to a smart phone, its impossible to go back.

My Desire has pretty rubish battery usage. I don't use WiFi except at home, GPS is only on when maps are on, no animinated backdrops and I would struggle to get a day out of it. Any other suggestions on how to improve it?

A few people have stated there is no need to run an application killer for the android based phones, but I have found that some applications dont shut down correctly.

There are a number of application killers that can be found in the market, some of them will be free to use.

+1 for the desire, but bought outright, jailbraked and a non independant rom put on it. Samsungs as phones are great when they first come out, but they NEVER upgrade their roms and therefor after a short while, their phones turn to crap.

I know a few people who have gotten the desire from Telstra, only to root in with a custom rom, next-g access with none of the Telstra crap on it ftw!

If you don't need the phone on the Next-G network, then the A8181 should do the job.
The only downside that I have found so far, is that there isn't an australian english selection from the Language & Keyboard option, so I just set it to English (Singapore) and it seems to work fine.

The A8183 will allow you to access the Next-G network but you will have the Telstra applications on the phone.

These can be removed by rooting the phone and installing a custom rom.
