It needs to go over the pits cost me 90 dollars then just the rego.

btw NSW DPI take their sweet ass time refunding the remaining rego its a minimum of four weeks for the cheque to arrive and ive been waiting 5 and a half

You also need to pay $20 per temp vehicle permit to get it there :) And they ask you for the permit number at the pits.

Do you need the temp permit if you buy a car over east and drive it back? Or is there some timeframe you have to get it done in?

Technically you need it before you drive over the border. You can do it over the phone and dont need to have the paperwork, but you will need the reference number handy if you get pulled up. I have previously called the states which I would have passed through during the journey and they have said it wasnt required for them. Things change though, so if you are considering driving a car back I would give them a ring.
