Is there a media ban on the word "aboriginal"??

It seems as though a few things have changed over the years, like this article for instance http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/breaking/8205041/police-hunt-thugs-over-attacks/

the suspects are named as "dark skinned", all of us know that they were aboriginal but why does the media refuse to use this word when naming suspects. When it comes to other things the Abos have done, ie some art or fighting for land etc the word is used.

Perhaps someone in the Law industry can answer this?

Mind you not longer than 5-10 years ago crime stoppers/newspapers widely named suspects as "of aboriginal appearance".

I've got some old local newspapers from the early 60's and they were called natives then.

Maybe they were African? If I was from Sudan and shanked some lacky in the street and some journalist labelled me aboriginal, I'd be offended.

It would be because Perth is more multicultural these days, so dark skinned could describe a perp of any one of a number of ethnic backgrounds.
