Default Oversized Trucks / Vehicles / Pilots

As per the above, what is the 'law' or where is it found, in relation to 'big' vehicles getting around the place...?

It isnt really a rant, im moreso curious, after seeing some finger pointing, swearing out the window, two blokes almost going to punching stations this morning on the commute in... did provide me a morning LOL.

Do pilot vehicles get the same treatment as official marked 'traffic escort' police vehicles? Is it just understood you do/dont pass... even if there is room?

Interested in knowing the rules, or healthy discussion.

Brent.

As far as pilots are concerned...

I remember the barney the postie had with pilots as stuff was leaving our place once. Postie wanted to duck in to drop off mail, pilots had the lights flashing so they were the bosses. The police that were there burst out laughing though and just let those guys yell at each other.

Basically, follow their instructions. Don't overtake unless there is a whole lane (i.e. pretty much need dual carriage way) or they wave you through. You're not sure what the next move is, so they might be planning to block off an intersection or something ahead and the last thing they need is cars weaving in and out.

I once had an experience during a Targa weekend where there was a large convoy of wide loads with many Pilot vehicles.

There was a collection of Targa watchers all trying to get to the next stage. There was a large wide section on the Great Northern and about 6-8 cars made a dash. The pilot vehicle blocked off a couple and the Policeman up the road pulled over the rest and booked them. Why did they get stopped - there were 4 further wide loads entering the convoy further up the road.

In the end we "crawled" behind the convoy at approx 10 Km/h to the next stage.

It's pretty simple, a direction given by a Pilot is the equivalent of a Police officer. Fail to follow their directions and face 3 points and $100.

I've got some photo's somewhere - I'll try and post as the loads were the biggest things I'd ever seen on the road.

Pilots aren't the law, only official marked Police escorts are. It takes a two day training course to become a pilot. Police escorts are usually semi retired police officers and they can book you as they seem necessary.

I got stuck behind a couple of trucks with wide loads on stock road the other day. Didn't bother me as its to be expected on that road and they were doing the speed limit anyway. Until they got stuck behind a couple of p plate girls on scooters doing 50km/h. 2 scooters managed to block a busy 2 lane road for about 10km.
